THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This study determine the effectiveness of text-to-speech in enhancing the conceptual
understanding of learners at study.

Introduction
Conceptual understanding is where the learners can grasp the ideas in a transferable way.
Conceptual understanding is important in academics because conceptual understanding is
essentially about learning more than isolated facts; it is about understanding the relationships
between those facts and having them arranged correctly. ( UOTP MARKETING, 2022).
Conceptual understanding is when the learners try to comprehending questions and think deeply
so they can understand the lessons in contact center services two. It helps the learners to organize
knowledge and discover new concepts by combining what they understand. Enhancing the
conceptual understanding of learners is important because it affects the learners academic
performance, with the help of enhancing the conceptual understanding of learners the learners
will get benefits. In a world where technology is in vogue, many scientists have invented tools to
facilitate people’s work and one of the examples is text-to-speech app.

Technology is one of the most helpful machinery and developed from application of
scientific knowledge. In education, the learners and teachers or professors used technology.
Using technology has become increasingly popular and technology is a big help in their tasks or
works. One example of this is text-to-speech, invited by a Japanese researcher named Noriko
Umeda in Electrotehnical Laboratory, Japan, in 1968. Text-to-Speech is a type of assistive
technology that reads digital text aloud. It’s sometimes called “read aloud”. In text-to-speech, all
kinds of text files can be read aloud, including Word and Pages documents. Even online web
pages can be read (Jamie Martin, 2018).
8

Text-to-Speech is a big help and useful for learners. Learners using the Moodle learning
platform can now listen to learning content in more than 50 languages, thanks to a new
integration with digital voice and text-to-speech tool Read Speaker, read speaker is the first text-
to-speech provider to become a Certified Integration Partner with Moodle, making its
accessibility and engagement tools available to more than 200 million learners worldwide (Rhea
Kelly, 2022).
According to Roy Lindemann, chief marketing officer for Read Speaker, “Text to speech
is a great equalizer and force multiplier for online learning, opening new and exciting pathways
for engagement and mastery for millions of students, not just those needing accommodations,
this partnership is extremely significant to the institutions and students we both serve, including
those needing accommodations and those who simply want added capabilities to engage with
learning materials.” With the use of text-to-speech, the understanding of learners in Contact
Center Services Two will enhance.

A contact center is a customer service hub that provides a variety of communication

channels, including phone, email, social media, chat, SMS and messaging, video conferencing,
screen sharing, and more. A contact center also uses CRM technology to empower agents to help
customers, accelerate response times, and provide personalized interactions and offers (Zoe
Sitrin, 2023). A contact center is a department responsible for managing customer interactions
across all channels—including the phone—but it tends to focus on digital technologies (Cristina
Maza, 2023).
Contact centers play a critical role in service businesses by acting as the interface
between customers and organizations. They are strategic tools to establish a relationship with
customers to promote customer satisfaction, which can lead to an increase in customer loyalty
and sales( Rodrigo et al, 2019). In the Philippines, Contact Center Services Two is a specialized
senior high school subject. This subject is focusing on developing the speaking skills and
knowledge of learners in contact service. With the help of Contact Center Services Two subject
the learners will develop their communication skills and enhance their listening skills.

Background of the Study

Text-to-speech is a great tool for learners cause many learners have a hard time focusing
on reading and get easily distracted by long passages or words. The learners view and hear it
which improves their memory and helps them easily understand and remember words. This text-
to-speech tool allows people of all ages to understand and learn at a better level. This technology
helps them a lot.

This helps them to pronounce the words correctly through text-to-speech. Text-to-speech
also encourages learners to think deeper by expressing themselves by taking down their thoughts
9

and when their done text to speech tool does the rest like arranging the spelling correctly, adding
punctuation and others. (Emanuilov, S. 2020,)

Also, text-to-speech technology in Grade 12 Humanities and Social Science could benefit
learners who are pursuing their careers in call centers. Text-to-speech enabling learners to build a
strong understanding and enhance their communication skills in contact center services.

This study will provide insights into the benefits and limitations of using text-to-speech
technology in Grade 12 Humanities and Social Science learners. Text-to-speech can effectively
enhance understanding and this study explores improving the quality of education and preparing
learners for their successful careers in the contact center services

Statement of the Problem

This study determine the effectiveness of text-to-speech in enhancing the conceptual
understanding of learners at study.
The study seeks to answer the following the :

1. What are the least mastered competencies in Contact Center Services Two based
on the summative test results in the previous academic year 2022-2023?

2. What is the level of acceptability of the text to speech engine as assessed by the
teachers in the terms of LRMDS evaluation tool for non print materials?

3. What is the level of learners conceptual understanding as reflected on their pre

test and mean scores?

4. Is there a significant difference in the pre test and post test mean scores of the
learners before and after the utilization of text to speech?

5. Based on the findings of this study, what learning plan may be developed?

Hypothesis of the Study

There’s no significant relationship between The Use of Text-to-speech and
conceptual understanding of grade 12 HUMSS learners.

Chapter II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter includes the review of related literature and studies which the researchers
have perused to shed light on the topic under study.

According to Trivits, the Learning Tools and Technology Lead at ESME, the integration
of Read Speaker into their courses has significantly enhanced the learning experience for
learners. ESME, which utilizes the Open edX platform for employee education, has been able to
provide a comprehensive and inclusive learning environment through this integration. Learners
now have the option to listen to the content using text-to-speech (TTS), have words translated, or
read along with the TTS feature. (Trivits, 2022)
TTS software is frequently utilized as a compensatory tool, particularly at the
postsecondary level. It has proven effective in helping students enhance their reading speed,
fluency, and ability to retain content. Moreover, it has contributed to an increase in students’
self-confidence in their reading skills and their ability to learn independently. Given these
positive outcomes, there is a clear necessity to allocate resources for training and technology to
support students in utilizing TTS effectively. (Raffoul & Jaber, 2023)
13

Text-to-speech technology in education offers numerous advantages. By utilizing this

technology, students are able to focus more on the content itself, rather than the act of reading.
This enhanced concentration leads to a deeper understanding of the topic at hand. Consequently,
students are better able to retain the information they learn, while also experiencing increased
self-esteem and motivation. An additional benefit is that text-to-speech technology can be
applied to various formats, including text files and web pages, making it accessible on any
device. This accessibility promotes students’ independence in the learning process. (Disabil,
2018)
Jocelyn Ceballos Andamon and Denis Abao Tan highlight the significance of grasping
the concepts in mathematics. They explain that having a deep understanding of the fundamental
concepts that drive mathematical algorithms is crucial. This understanding is achieved through
active participation and allowing students to have autonomy in their learning. It is important for
students to have both procedural and conceptual understanding in order to have a comprehensive
understanding of mathematics. When students demonstrate true comprehension and readiness for
standardized tests, teachers can confidently evaluate their knowledge and skills in mathematical
concepts. (Andamon & Abao, 2018)
Review of Related Studies
The study conducted by the researchers indicates that individuals who choose to take
notes using voice recordings experience a heightened level of conceptual comprehension
compared to those who prefer typing their notes. Furthermore, this method of note-taking
stimulates generative processes, leading to learners producing more detailed and comprehensive
notes. (Khan et al, 2020)
According to the findings, students with dyslexia demonstrated higher scores on reading
comprehension questions across all reading conditions. Additionally, they derived greater
benefits from text-to-speech (TTS) and the listen-only condition when compared to students with
Reading and Language Impairment. Overall, the use of TTS shows potential as a valuable tool
for enhancing the reading comprehension abilities of students facing challenges with reading and
language, particularly those with dyslexia. However, further research is necessary to examine the
specific advantages of TTS features such as highlighting for students with reading and language
difficulties. (Jennifer, et al 2023)
Text-to-speech technology can also be beneficial for learners who are able to speak and
understand a language but face challenges in reading it. This is particularly relevant for
individuals who have recently arrived in a new country and are learning the native language.
While they may have a basic understanding of reading, text-to-speech technology provides an
alternative way for them to consume information in a manner that is more comfortable and
familiar to them. This, in turn, facilitates easier comprehension and retention of the content.
( Rodriguez Bonce, 2019)
TTS systems generate speech that sounds like a human voice from written text. Over the
years, speech synthesizers used in TTS have improved significantly in quality and intelligibility,
thanks to advancements in memory resources and cost reduction. This progress has greatly
benefited the development and evaluation of scanned Filipino text-to-speech devices, which
serve as reading aids for the blind and visually impaired. (Pascual, 2018)
14

According to a study conducted by Jasmin Krissia R. Imus & Razeale G. Resultay, it is

recommended that teachers adopt innovative approaches, like utilizing text-to-speech
technology, to enhance the instruction of reading comprehension. This is particularly important
for students who are struggling in this area, as improving their reading skills is crucial for their
overall academic success. Additionally, it is vital to provide reading teachers with opportunities
for professional development, such as attending training sessions, seminars, workshops, and
symposia that focus on enhancing their skills in using technology to teach reading. By
implementing these strategies, we can effectively enhance students’ reading proficiency. (Imus,
et al., 2019)
Synthesis of the Study
This topic is about text-to-speech, One study conducted by Wang and Chen (2018) found
that text-to-speech technology can improve reading comprehension among students with
dyslexia. The study showed that students who used text-to-speech technology had better reading
comprehension scores compared to those who did not use the technology. Another study by Li
and Wang (2019) explored the use of text-to-speech technology in language learning. The study
found that students who used text-to-speech technology had better pronunciation and speaking
skills compared to those who did not use the technology.
These findings suggest that text-to-speech technology can be a valuable tool for students
with dyslexia and for language learners. By providing auditory support, text-to-speech
technology can help students with dyslexia overcome difficulties in decoding and understanding
written text. It can also assist language learners in improving their pronunciation and speaking
skills by providing accurate models of native speech. The use of text-to-speech technology can
enhance reading comprehension by allowing students to listen to the text while reading along.
This dual modality approach can help students with dyslexia process and understand the
conmore effectively. Additionally, the auditory feedback provided by text-to-speech technology
help students with dyslexia recognize and correct errors in their reading

Theoretical framework
This study is anchored on the Cognitive Load Theory introduced by John Sweller
in 1988. He stated that the working memory of a person has a limited capacity and can
only handle a small amount of information at a time. This theory focuses on the capacity
of human working memory and how it impacts learning. The theory suggests that
instructional methods should be designed to align with the limitations of individuals’
working memory.

By applying the Cognitive Load Theory in this study, text-to-speech can help
improve the conceptual understanding of learners and enhance the instrumental method.
15

Using text-to-speech in the field of education, teachers can apply the principles of
Cognitive Load Theory to improve students’ conceptual understanding This is because
using technology in the field of education can distribute the cognitive load of learners.
