Assignment- 5 (Complex functions)

(Date: 20/03/2024; Due date : 05/04/2024)

1. Determine where the function f (z) = (3z 4 − 2z 3 + 8z 2 − 2z + 5)/(z − i) is discontinuous. Re-define f at that
point, if possible, to make it continuous.
2. (a) If f (z) = z 2 z , show that f ′ (z) does not exist anywhere.
(b) Let f (z) = (x − y)2 + 2i(x + y). Show that f ′ (z) exists only along the line x − y = 1. Is the function analytic
anywhere?
(c) Find points where the function f (z) = (z + 3i)5 /(z 2 − 2z + 5)2 is not analytic.
3. (a) Show that 
2xy(x+iy)

f (z) =
 0, if z = 0,
is not analytic at z = 0, although C − R equations are satisfied there.

(b) Show that f (z) = |xy| satisfies C − R equations at the origin but is not analytic there.
4. Determine which of the following functions are analytic?
(i) 2xy + i(x2 − y 2 ) (ii) (x − iy)/(x2 + y 2 ) (iii) cosh z.
5. If f (z) = u + iv is analytic; prove that

log |f (z)| = 0.
6. Determine the analytic function f (z) = u + iv if (i) u = y + ex cos y (ii) v = e−x (x cos y + y sin y).
7. Determine orthogonal trajectories of (i) r2 cos 2θ = c1 (ii) (r2 + 1) cos θ = c1 r.
8. Determine the analytic function f such that ℜ(f ′ (z)) = 3x2 − 4y − 3y 2 and f (1 + i) = 0.
9. (a) Find all solutions of (i) e3z = 1 (ii) sin z = 3.
(b) Find all values and the principal value of ln(1 − i).
10. (a) Define conformal mapping. Prove that the mapping given by an analytic function w = f (z) is conformal
at a point z0 provided f ′ (z0 ) ̸= 0.
(b) Show that w(z) = z + 1/z, is conformal except at z = ±1. Discuss the mapping details of this mapping.
