Study of Power Systems On Etap

Power system studies for FPSOs include steady state studies like load flow and short circuit, and dynamic studies like motor starting. These studies face challenges due to the offshore environment, integration of renewable energy, and need to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining reliable power.

What are the power system studies need for the FPSO

1.)What is FPSO?

 It is the Floating Production Storage & off-loading.

 It is the vessel which is constructed in off-shore, probably it travels & probably put it
in some place & it is going to extract the oil then stored in the oil tank in the ship.
 Then that oil is off-loading to the wherever it is required
2.)How to power up the FPSO
 Typically, FPSO is powered by gas turbine or diesel generators.
 Now a days the diesel generators are obsolete due to the carbon emission control.
 Now a days Gas Turbines are used to powered up the FPSO.
 Floating Production Storage & off-loading which is fed by Gas turbine generators.
 Typically the GTG are run with the N+1 configuration
3.)What is N+1 configuration?
Even if one of the generators is tripped due to the fault in the generator then the rest of generators are able
to cater the entire load of the FPSO
4.)There are quite lot of challenges performing the power system studies for FPSO?

The power system studies are classified into,

(i.)steady state studies
 Load Flow,
 Short Circuit study
 Harmonic Analysis
 Relay Co-ordination
 Arc Flash study
(ii.)Dynamic studies
 Motor acceleration study
a.)Load flow study:-
Load Flow study to find out:-
 we can check the vg at the bus with the allowable limit or not
 what is the equipment loading
 Reactive power compensation need or not
 14km+4km sub sea cable from WTG to 66kV-->due to more capacitance-->it is the reactive power
compensation
 What is the Generator terminal voltage
 what is the loss of the systems
 What is the tap range given to the Transformer
The reason is you need to run the lot of cases for the load flow studies

b.) Short Circuit study:-

 Since all the Generators & large capacity motors are connected in the medium voltage.
 Short circuit study is always the challenge.
 You may need the short circuit limiting methodology like IS limiters.
 Motor you may have the large capacity of motors starting the motor is always challenge.
 To find out the short time rating of equipment
 breaking & making current of the circuit breakers
 Short circuit study is the input for the Relay Co-ordination study, Harmonic Analysis study, Arc Flash
study
c.) Harmonic Analysis study:
 Harmonic are produced due to the non-linear loads like power electronics.
 As per IEEE519, to find out the
 Total Harmonic Distortion of voltage
 Total Demand Distortion of current
Recommendation:-
 Filter has to be sized and need to install.
 Filter are the LC component to perform the resonance studies
d.) Arc Flash study:-
 To find out the arc flash boundary
 what is the PPE equipment is required
e.)Transient stability study
 Transient stability, the critical clearing time much low.
 Modelling of the Generator AVR & governor is the another challenge
f.)Relay Co-ordination study:-
 When it comes to the relay co-ordination you need to clear the fault the fault is well within the time
is the another challenge.
 The fault current fed by the generators are not going to be constant that is comes down with respect
to time because of the generator reactance Xd”, Xd’, Xd. So, that it make the another challenge
g.)Motor starting studies:-
The Motor starting study is further classified as
static motor starting studies:-
 When the motors are starting, due to the large starting current of motor which makes the
voltage dip in the connected bus.
Dynamic motor starting studies:-
 To run the motor model and load model.
 Then, to find out the motor is able to start or not
Recommendation:- we can use the soft starters can be used
h.)Transient stability studies:-

Electro-mechanical Transient
 Angular stability to find out the Critical clearing time(Max. fault clearing time)
 Voltage stability
Electro-magnetic transient
 Insulation co-ordination studies:-
 To check the dielectric strength of the equipment’s.
 if the over voltage like the Temporary over voltage, slow front overvoltage, fast front
over voltage & very fast front over voltage which may arises.
 This overvoltage is within the limit or not
Recommendation:- surge arrestor has to be installed
In the Insulation co-ordination study,
 if the system voltage is below 245kV then the switching study is important
 if the system voltage is more than 245kV then the switching studies & lightning studies is more
important
k.)Transformer Energization study:-
 why we need the Transformer energization study
 Transformer able to energize the 4 no's of 28MW generator
 Due to step down transformer(66/13.8kV) energization voltage dip occurs on 13.8kV bus

5.)Additional Challenges in these case study:-

 In addition to that all our customer came up with the novel idea of integrating the off-load wind
turbine generator to the FPSO to reduce the power generated by the gas turbine generator.
 So that CO2 emission can be reduced.
 Our customers also attempted adding battery energy storage systems to switch off one of the gas
turbine generators.
 So, that makes the commercial saving & CO2 emission reduction
 Now you can imagine what are all the quite lot of challenges which can come & the transformer
energization you have the large capacity transformer that also need to be energized
