SCIENCE 5

Quarter 1 Module 7 Week 7

Day 1
Objective
• List the effects of improper waste disposal.

Brief Introduction
Proper waste disposal is important in maintaining the cleanliness of our
surroundings. It also helps protect and conserve our natural resources.

Let’s Recall (Review)

Identify the 5Rs techniques of waste management being described in the statement.
_______________1. It means lessening the amount of waste materials.
_______________2. It means to use the materials again for other uses.
_______________3. It is the process of making the waste materials into a new product.
_______________4. It means fixing broken materials .
_______________5. It is the process of converting waste materials into new resources.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Despite the effort of our government and some environmental organizations to
disseminate the importance of waste management, still the problem of improper waste disposal
continues to happen. Improper waste disposal can create catastrophic problems. The following are
some of the effects of improper waste disposal.
 Soil Contamination
Waste materials like batteries, electronics, used oil, bleach and medical waste when
breakdown releases a harmful component that contains harmful substances that contaminate the
soil.
 Contamination of water resources
During rainy seasons, Leachate from garbage gets into our water-lakes, river, ocean and
seas causing serious pollution in water. When water is contaminated, diseases like cholera,
dysentery and leptospirosis are spread and can cause serious problems to the people.
 Air Pollution
Paper, rubber, plastics and other waste materials are burned at the landfill causing air
pollution. These practices also release greenhouse gases like methane gas that destroy the Ozone
layer and contribute to global warming.

Let’s Apply
List down 2 harmful effects of improper disposal of waste materials to land. water, air
and human/animals. Copy the chart and answer on your answer sheet.

WEEK 7 DAY 2

Objective
• Describe ways on how to reduce waste materials.

Let’s Recall (Review)

Direction: Look at the pictures below. List 5 harmful effects of improper
waste disposal on your answer sheet.
Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

One of the most important things we do to protect our environment is to

find ways to reduce our waste. Reduce is one of the 5Rs techniques in waste
management. It simply means to reduce the amount of materials and goods you consume.
Here are some ways on how to reduce waste materials.
• buy items in refillable containers
• Use cloth bag/eco bag/paper bag/ native baskets instead of plastic bag or disposable
bags, when you buy in a supermarket.
• Avoid buying disposable items or single use products such as batteries, razors,
utensils, plates, cups etc.
• Buy products in bigger packs than those packed in small sachets.
• Buy rechargeable batteries instead of disposable batteries. This way we can
minimize waste and save money at the same time.

Let’s Apply
Direction: Write some ways on how to reduce common waste materials in your home.
Waste Materials Ways to reduce
1. Disposable plastic bag
2. Plastic wrapper
3. Plastic container
4. paper
5. water consumption

Let’s Analyze
Read the following situations. Draw if the actions show ways of reducing
waste materials and if not.

__________1. Mary used aluminum foil to wrap the leftover food and kept it in the
refrigerator.
__________2. Mary collects her friends' used bond papers and uses the back side of it for
keeping notes of her school lessons.
_______ 3. Mother brings native basket every time she goes to the market.
__________4. My brother refuses to buy new shoes for school because his shoes are still in
good condition.
__________5. Use a disposable plastic container for your packed lunch.

WEEK 7 DAY 3
Objective
 Describe ways on how to repair possible waste materials.
Let’s Recall (Review)
Write Yes if the statement tells about ways of reducing waste materials and No if not.
__________1. Use an eco-bag/cloth bag when shopping in the supermarket.
__________2. Buy products with little or less packaging.
__________3. Reuse food containers.
__________4. Use a plastic bag and throw them away after using it once.
__________5. Avoid using disposable items.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Repairing items is another technique in reducing our waste materials. Repair is fixing
or restoring broken items to be used again. Repairable materials include furniture, appliances and
clothes. Example, if your shoes get worn out or your school bag gets torn in some parts, you can
have the shoes resoled or the bag repaired instead of buying new ones.

Let’s Apply
What are you going to do with the following broken materials? Copy the answer
chart below and write the correct answer on your answer sheet.
Material to be repaired What will you do to fix the materials?
1. broken chair leg
2. broken umbrella
3. Torn school uniform
4. broken appliances
5. broken bicycle wheel

Let’s Analyze
Identify the way of fixing the given items below. Write the letter of the best answer.
A. by sewing B. by nailing E. by recycling
C. by replacing damaged part D. by gluing

______1. detached ribbon of a hair band

______2. broken table leg
______3. burnout lamp of a lampshade
______4. damaged electric fan cord
______5. torn dress

WEEK 7 DAY 4
Objective
• Describe ways on how materials can be recovered from possible waste
materials.
Let’s Recall (Review)

Read the following situations. Draw if the actions shows ways to repair
waste materials and if not.
__________1. Reuse used containers for other purposes.
__________2. Fix broken appliances
__________3. Mending the torn shirt and short.
__________4. Replace broken parts of your motorcycle
__________5. Throw broken appliances.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Recover is to convert waste materials into resources such as electricity, heat, compost
and fuel. There are various ways of recovering energy from certain materials. Plastic wastes can
be processed and turn into fuel. Organic waste like food scraps can turn into compost through the
process of composting. Incineration of waste can also generate energy. This energy can be used
to generate electricity or heat. Recovering waste is not limited to recovering energy. It also
involves segregation of materials in recovery facilities. Most of the waste is segregated in the
Material Recovery Facility (MRF). In an MRF, collected garbage is segregated in order to recover
recyclables and biodegradable materials that can be used as compost ingredients. Through MRFs,
the amount of waste to be disposed of in landfills is reduced.

Let’s Apply
List 5 energy we can recover from the following waste materials.

Let’s Analyze
Read and analyse each sentence. Write True if the concept is correct and False if it
is wrong.
__________1. Food scraps, fruit peeling and other biodegradable waste can be buried to soil and
change to compost.
__________2. Used oil can be recycled and processed to be used again as new oil or as industrial
oil.
__________3. Waste that cannot be recycled anymore, can still be used to produce heat through
an incineration process in which heat is needed in the generation of electricity.
__________4. Recovering waste also involves segregation.
__________5. Incineration technology is the best recycling technique.

WEEK 7 DAY 5

Objective
• Recycling discarded slippers/rubber

Let’s Recall (Review)

Fill in the blanks with the correct answer. Choose your answer from the box.
a. heat, fuel and electricity b. compost c. MRF d. Incineration e. recover

__________1. It means to extract energy from waste materials that cannot be

recycled.
__________2. It is an organic matter that has been decomposed in a process called
composting.
__________3. It is a facility designed to receive, segregate and prepare recyclable
materials to sell to manufacturers as raw materials for new products.
__________4. It is the process of burning garbage to generate energy that can be
used to produce electricity or heat.
__________5. Kind of energy that can be recovered from waste materials.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Discarded rubber slippers are one of the waste materials that can be seen anywhere and
in the landfill. Tons and tons of plastic waste including slippers flow down the rivers and
clog the drainage system. When this waste material starts to break down it can leach toxic
chemicals into the environment due to the variety of non-recyclable plastic use in their
manufacture. Instead of throwing your old slippers to trash, we can create cool and
creative stuff out of it. Here are some suggestions you can make.
• Cut your old slippers into small rounds and use them as protective gripper pads for your
furniture legs.
• You can shred the slippers into thin strips and use them as cushion.
• Cut slippers to size to use as gaskets (only when the heat is not an issue.)
• Use the slippers to make hanging mobiles and children toys.
• It can also be used in making rubber doormat.
