 Discuss the advantages of cleaning equipment to the work of a
housekeeper;
 Explain the purposes of housekeeping cleaning tools and equipment;
 Identify the proper tools and equipment for a specific cleaning
requirement.

CONTENT

EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS FOR HOUSEKEEPING OPERATIONS

Would you like to speed up housekeeping and cleaning tasks, making them
easier and also much more efficient? Then you should create a housekeeping
equipment list for every product you are using!

Having the right, most suited products and equipment for the material you
are cleaning will make a major difference. Modern day technology means that many
pieces of cleaning equipment have undergone transformations to make them much
more efficient, safer, lighter and easier to handle. Finally, using better products and
equipment can make a big difference for your health and the environment. Plenty of
reason to check the cleaning cupboard and update your kit!

A. Manual Cleaning Equipment

1. Chambermaid’s Trolley
This is to stock a given number of linens equipment and supplies to
service an alloted number og guestrooms. It makes the housekeeping staff to
move it around and carry large number of item in one go while keeping and
cleaning the guest room. It also helps in transporting used bed and bath lines
in chutes thus preventing strain and back injuries of room attendants.

2. Janitor’s Trolley
It is a highly mobile trolley fitted with shelves and waste receptacles that
store cleaning supplies such as detergents, spray bottles, dustbin, mop, and
dusting cloths, all in a compact manner.

3. Mop and Mop Wringer


A mop can be made of cotton for high absorbing ability or synthetic. Mop
have different kinds such as string mops flat mops, dust mop and synthetic. A
mop wringer is a wheeled bucket that squeezes out the water from the mop
without getting the hands dirty.

4. Carpet Sweeper
It is used to pick up dirt in carpet floors.

B. Electric Cleaning Equipment:
1. Vacuum Cleaner
This is the most commonly used cleaning equipment in housekeeping.
It comes with a suction motor fit a case, a hose and various attachments for
different cleaning requirements. It can be an upright vacuum cleaner used to
clean dust particles in carpeted floors or wet floor.

2. Polishing Machine
It is used to add shine to the floors of frequently visited areas of
the hotel.

3. Scrubber
It is an equipment that is used when mopping doesn’t suffice. It
is used for scrubbing stubborn and sticky strains on the floors of the
hotel.

It is a machine with pressure tank filled with water solution and
shampoo to clean water sensitive carpet, needle-felt and other carpeted types
whose construction inhibits sufficient water extraction.

CLEANING AGENT OR CHEMICALS
It helps in removing offensive odor and avoids spreading of dirt and
contaminant. These chemicals may be in the form of liquid, powder or sometimes
blocks which are diluted in the right amount. Soft water is used as hard water
cannot dilute detergent
properly.

1. Water- This is the most common cleaning agent.

2. Vinegar- It helps in removing light stains in guest bathroom

3. All-purpose cleaner- This use to remove all kinds of dirt.

4. Glass cleaner- This used to clean glass surfaces.

5. Bathroom cleaners- These chemicals are contains with


phosphoric acid that is used in cleaning and disinfecting the
bathroom walls, bathtubs, bathroom flooring, tiles, sinks and
showers

6. Disinfectant- It helps in killing or destroying disease carrying
microorganisms.

7. Metal polish- It is being used to polished metal fixtures.

8. Clean air sprays- It is used to eliminate odors and pungent smell


in public areas. Though some guests may be allergic to strong
scents, odorless air sprays are normally used in hotels.

9. Degreaser- It is used to remove grease in guest amenities such as


lipstick stains on coffee cups and glasses, they sometimes contain
organic solvent to help dissolve oils.

10. Floor cleaner and sealers- It is used to remove stains, dirt and
grit and beautify the floor, these cleaning agents may restore the
original shine of the floor.

11. Detergents- It is used in cleaning uniforms, linens and other


cloths used in the hotel operations. This contain various elements,
that clean and makes linen stronger as well.

12. Bleach- Bleach is used for laundry purpose that helps in


maintaining the white linens to its original color.

13. Fibric Softener- This helps in maintaining the linens and other
types of cloth soft.

14. Swimming pool cleaner- This chemical kills the bacterial and
algae growth in the water.

Other chemical used in housekeeping may include the


following:

3. Insecticides
4. Muriatic acid
5. Drain cleaners
