1) What is computer?
A computer is an electronic device that converts data into information.
this device designed to accept data, perform mathematical and logical
operations, and display the results of these operations. It is used for
processing and storing data typically in binary form (0,1) and providing
output according to user’s instruction.

2) Explain a few of the different ways in which computers can be


categorized.
The following are different ways in which a computer can be categorized:
Mainframe Computers:
▪ Used by large organizations
▪ physically bigger than other computers
▪ They can handle the workload of a 1000 or more different users at the
same time.
▪ User access through a terminal
Supercomputers:
▪ Similar to Mainframe Computers
▪ Most powerful computers made
▪ these are computers that handle huge amounts of work.
▪ they can perform trillion of operations per second.
Minicomputers:
▪ Called midrange computers
▪ These are mainly used by business to maintain several accounts and
finances in general.
▪ They can handle the workload of a 100 or more different users at the
same time.
Microcomputers:
▪ These are the most known computers.
▪ Smaller computers.
▪ Cheaper than other computers.
▪ The best-known model is the Desktop Computer. some of the other types
of microcomputers commonly used are Tablet PCs, Laptops, Notebooks
and Workstations.

Six types of computers that are designed for use by a single person are:
1. Desktop computers
2. Workstation
3. Notebook
4. Tablet
5. Handheld computers
6. Smart phones

4) Describe the two common designs for desktop computers?


Two common designs for desktop are:
▪ Horizontal oriented system, which usually lies flat on the top of the user’s
desk.
▪ Vertical oriented or tower computer have become the more popular style
of desktop system.

5) How much do notebook computers typically weigh?


Notebook computers typically weigh less than 6 pounds and are small
enough to fit easily in a briefcase.

and are commonly used by multiple people at the same time?
The four types of computer that are designed for use by organizations,
and are commonly used by multiple people at the same time are:
1. Minicomputers.
2. Microcomputer.
3. Mainframe computers.
4. Supercomputers.

7) Why are mainframe systems usually limited in the number of tasks they
perform?
Mainframes computers are usually limited in the number of the number
of tasks they performed because of their high-power consumptions, high
cost and because of their size.

8) What is the most popular use for home computers?


The most popular use of computer at home are:
▪ Playing games
▪ Word processing
▪ Accounting
▪ Assignments
▪ Finance

9) How are computer technologies used by the military?


The computers have played an increasingly important role in the military,
The computers in the military have been adapted or designed to do a
broad range of tasks , such as analyzing intelligence , organizing prudent
data for military leaders , geospatial analysis , controlling smart weapons
, or communications .

10) How are computer technologies being used to train surgeons?


Computer technologies provides an option of virtual reality so that the
surgeon get an opportunity to work in virtual reality environment without
risking anyone's life while performing surgeries.
