Pyramids of Giza: The Wonders of Egypt

4 Intermediate

Emily and Grandpa Gus have set off on their first adventure! They're visiting Giza in
Egypt.

Your tutor will read each sentence in the story. Repeat after them and ask questions if
you're unsure about anything. Make sure that you understand the Key Words!
Exercise 1
A Camel Ride

Emily and Grandpa Gus start their adventure with a camel ride through the desert.

Wow, Grandpa! This camel ride is so fun! It's like riding a horse, isn't it?

Emily

It sure is. But you won't see many horses in the desert!

Gus

Why's that? Is it too hot for them?

Emily
That's right, Emily! And it would be difficult for them to find food. But
camels can eat almost anything — even cactuses!
Gus

Exercise 2
The Great Pyramid
Emily and Grandpa Gus make it to the Great Pyramid.

This is the Great Pyramid, the largest of the three pyramids in Giza. It's
made of over two million stone blocks!
Gus

Wow, that's amazing!

Emily

I know! And it was mainly built by hand. So that was a lot of hard work!

Gus

... and I get tired just building a sandcastle at the beach!

Emily

Exercise 3
The Sphinx
A little while later, Emily and Grandpa Gus see a huge statue.

What's that, Grandpa?

Emily

It's the Sphinx. It was also built by the Egyptians a long time ago!

Gus

But what is it, though? Is it a person or an animal?

Emily

It's actually both, Emily! It has the body of a lion with a human head.

The River Nile

To finish their adventure, Emily and Grandpa Gus sit down by the River Nile.

It's so beautiful here, Grandpa.

Emily
It sure is! This is the Nile, Emily — the longest river in the world.

Gus

Really? Huh, it doesn't seem all that big to me!

Emily

Well, if we took one of those boats, it would take us days to get to the
end!
Gus

Woah! Days? But then we could see hippos and antelopes and
crocodiles! Let's do that, Grandpa! Can we do that?
Emily

Maybe some other time!

Gus

Let's Talk!
Time to talk! Answer the questions and ask your teacher some questions as well.

2. Would you rather have a hippo or a camel as a pet?

3. Do you think lions or crocodiles are scarier?

Exercise 6
Spot the Differences

Look at the images and try to find all of the differences!

There are four differences in total. See if you can spot them all!
