ALL: WE ARE HERE TO
PRESENT OUR STUDY
ENTITLED “ PUSLO NG
MAG AARAL: UNRAVELING
THE PERCEPTION ON
ACADEMIC CALENDAR OF
STUDENTS IN ALLEN
NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL”
Cedrick: And now we will
going to present the context and
rationale
The school calendar stands as a
cornerstone of the educational
system, setting the pace for the
academic year with its schedule
of classes, breaks, and key
events. It is a crucial component
of the educational system,
shaping the rhythm and
structure of learning for
students, teachers, and
administrators alike. The design
of the school calendar can have
significant implications for
student learning outcomes,
teacher effectiveness, and
overall school performance.

Sheene: A number of Philippine

universities have shifted their
academic calendar (AC) from
June-March (old AC) to August-
May (new AC). Such AC
shifting was primarily aimed to
synchronize with other higher
education institutions in
Southeast Asia, which could
provide flexibility for
collaborative research works
and eventually promote their
global competitiveness
(Villafuerte 2017).

Sheena: The school’s division

of Northern Samar emphasizes
the importance of the
Department of Education's
academic calendar, recognizing
its paramount role in shaping
the educational experience of
students, teachers, and
administrators. Understanding
the perceptions and experiences
of stakeholders is essential for
designing a school calendar that
meets their needs and enhances
their overall learning
experience.

Sheene: moving on to the

research question, the first
question “What are the
perceptions of students at allen
national high school regarding
the current academic calendar?”
The purpose of that question is
to gather information about how
students at Allen National High
School perceive the current
academic calendar. It aims to
understand their thoughts,
feelings, and opinions about
various aspects of the calendar,
such as its structure, timing,
effectiveness, and any potential
areas for improvement. The
second question, “What factors
and reasons influence the
perception of students regarding
the academic calendar?” this
question is to delve into the
various factors and reasons that
shape students' views and
opinions about the academic
calendar. The third and last is “
What recommendations can be
made for optimizing the
academic calendar?” The
purpose of this research
question is to identify and
propose potential improvements
or changes to the academic
calendar in order to enhance its
effectiveness and meet the
needs of students, faculty, and
other stakeholders. By seeking
recommendations for
optimizing the academic
calendar, researchers aim to
gather insights, suggestions, and
best practices from various
perspectives.
These researchers questions
well help the researchers to
identify the insights and
perception of the students in
allen national high school

May Ann: And now let’s

proceed to Theoretical
Framework. The central concept
guiding this study is Year-
Round Education (YRE) theory,
proposed by (Furhman in 2001),
this framework explores the
complex interplay between
traditional academic calendars
and their potential
transformation through the lens
of stakeholder perceptions.
YRE proposes segmenting the
school year into shorter terms
interspersed with breaks, aiming
to address potential drawbacks
like summer learning loss and
student disengagement

Aque: Self-Determination
Theory (SDT) by Deci & Ryan
in 2000 is one of the supporting
theories, this theory suggests
that to understand student
perceptions about alternative
academic calendars. One must
focus on core psychological
needs like autonomy (control
and choice), competence
(feeling capable), and
relatedness (connection with
others), SDT offers valuable
insights. Analyzing how YRE
might fulfill these needs, such
as through flexible learning
options, shorter breaks
minimizing learning loss, or
increased interaction with peers
and teachers, contributes to a
nuanced understanding of
student perceptions towards this
calendar structure

Sheena: To complement the

analysis of student perceptions,
the Communities of Practice
(CoP) framework by Wenger
(1998) offers valuable insights
into faculty perceptions
regarding YRE. This framework
emphasizes the importance of
collaboration and knowledge
sharing among educators, which
can be significantly impacted by
changes to the academic
calendar. Analyzing YRE
through the lens of CoPs sheds
light on potential disruptions to
existing collaboration patterns,
opportunities for fostering new
ones, and the impact on
knowledge sharing and
professional development
(Wenger, 1998)
May Ann: Smart et al. 2016
This study focuses on student
perceptions in a university
setting, emphasizing the
importance of a well-organized
and predictable calendar with
breaks aligned with personal
schedules. This perspective
from students themselves is
valuable for understanding their
needs when considering
calendar changes.
Doe et al. (2023)
This study investigates
perceptions of a recent
academic calendar shift,
providing valuable insights
from both students and faculty
("faculty’s overall assessment
for Academic Calendar Shift is
4.49 (mean rating) showing that
they “Strongly Agree” with the
benefits of academic shift"). It's
particularly interesting because
it's a recent study (2023) and
explores a real-world calendar
change.
Aque: DeLeon et al. (2018) &
DeLeon (2022)
his research duo offers
contrasting findings on the
impact of calendar types on
student achievement. DeLeon et
al. (2018) highlights the
ongoing discussion about
calendar structures, while
DeLeon (2022) finds no
significant difference in
achievement between traditional
and year-round calendars for
fifth graders. This contrast
encourages further exploration
of calendar design and its
effects.

Cedrick: Allen National High

school was chosen as the
research site of this study
because it is where the problem
occurred. This is the chosen site
because it is where the problem
occurred. The researchers will
use purposive sampling,
specifically the maximum
variation o heterogenous
sampling method. The sampling
method is use to capture a wide
range of perceptions on
academic calendar of students
in allen national high school.
This method is best suits for in
our study as it involves the
researcher’s expertise to select
the participants that is useful to
the purpose of the research. The
research design employed in
this study utilizes grounded
theory to explore emerging
patterns and themes within the
data. The research instrument
for this study is semi structured
interview allowing the
researchers to modify guide
questions based on the research
questions of the study and
allowing for the researchers to
ask follow-up questions
The guide question well be
validated by Raynaldo L
Banjawan internal validator and
Fr. Dan kevin P. Solayao, OFM
ALL: "An academic calendar is
not just a schedule; it's a
compass guiding students
through the journey of
knowledge, with milestones to
mark their progress and dreams
to shape their destiny.”
Thankyou for listening, We're
ready to help with your
questions and would love to
hear your recommendations.
