1.INTRODUCTION

Design Engineering is a course initiated by the Gujarat Technological University,

Ahmedabad for the FIRST EVER TIME IN INDIA. It teaches the application of Design
Thinking Methodology and tools to bring in Innovation through academic projects across
all the branches. The students and faculty members explore the course, so far, the initial
finding through experience is found to be wonderful, and giving, a high hope. Certainly,
an extensive time span is needed for the course to be structured and absorbed by the
students and faculty in the fraternity at large.

In this semester, we performed various activities regarding design engineering that are as
follows:
1. AEIOU sheets.
2. Mind mapping.
3. Empathy mapping.
4. Ideation.
5. Product development canvas.
6. Learning Need Matrix (LNM)
6. Rough prototype.
1.1What is Astute Traffic Management System

With the increase in urbanization, many cities around the world are
experiencing a very rapid growth in the number of vehicles which lead to serious
traffic congestion problems. This places a greater demand on operating roadway
systems with maximum efficiency. One major factor that affects the traffic flow is
the management of the traffic at road intersection. Hence a good traffic
management system is needed to maximize the efficiency of the traffic flow.

“Traffic Signal” mainly controls the traffic at various junctions. This is

specialized software designed to control heavy traffic very easily by changing the
lights at regular intervals. The project “Astute Traffic Signal Management”
facilitates easy control of heavy traffic which uses three lights Red, Yellow and
Green. The lights used to indicate the signaling. A flashing RED light indicates
STOP. YELLOW indicates BE READY and lastly GREEN indicates GO. Lights
changes automatically at variable intervals of time

Fig 1.1.1 Traffic Signal [5]

The project aims to decrease the waiting delay time at each road intersection
and to increase its throughput. The traffic flow with the largest traffic density is
scheduled first, without exceeding the maximum allowable green time for that
phase.
1.2 Prior Art Search
Summary: -
1) A goal of the device and process of the invention is 40 improvement of the traffic
management by including the camera as information source and automating the
extraction of the useful information by image processing and analysis techniques
performed on the video images of the traffic and circulation. The improvement of the
traffic management begins by:
● Automatically measuring the road traffic movements. Automatically
diagnosing the regulation operation and its deficiencies.
● Remotely controlling the three-color traffic signals by automatically
considering the spatiotemporal information (vehicular surface coverage in
time) on the road traffic movement stemming from the devices of the
invention.
● Automatically monitoring the events and their origins that could be relevant to
the traffic manager.

2) The present disclosure may provide a system and method for intelligent traffic control
using wireless sensor and actuator networks. By using wireless communication for
traffic information exchange, it may monitor and detect the traffic state. It uses
distributed decision-making architecture to achieve effective traffic light control
through intersection control in accordance with the actual traffic state.
3) In accordance with a first aspect of the invention there is provided a method for
determining information relating to the operation of at least one traffic control signal,
the traffic control signal being operable to transition between different phases in use,
the method comprising:
● using data indicative of the durations of multiple instances of at least one phase
of the traffic control signal to determine, for the or each phase, data indicative
of a distribution of the durations of the multiple instances of the phase; and
● using the determined distribution data to obtain data indicative of a probability
of the traffic control signal having a given phase at one or more future time.

4) This algorithm utilizes the vehicular ad hoc technology to gather the real-time traffic
characteristics of each surrounding traffic flow. The largest density first schedule is
implemented to set the phases of each traffic light cycle. The ready area is defined
around the signalized road intersection to determine the maximum allowable time for
each phase. The maximum allowable time should not exceed the maximum green
time. The actual time set for each phase depends on the location of the farthest vehicle
in each process of the traffic flow. From the experimental results, we infer that ITLC
algorithm achieves a better performance compared to previously introduced
algorithms in this field.
2.OBSERVATIONS

2.1 A-E-I-O-U framework

The A E I O U framework is very useful and the most basic sheet required for
design engineering
A-Activity
E-Environment
I-Interaction
O-Object
U- User
It involves observation of the domain selected area with a group of four, each
taking their individual observations at same time. The task was performed by each
member and we had to go to our selected area for five times.
In these activities we all group member had to use their observation skill to
perform the task of AEIOU sheet and we have to identify all the things which comes
under these categories the frame work of group members are as follows:

[Fig. 2.1.1 Activities]

[Fig. 2.2.1 Environment]

[Fig. 2.3.1 Interaction]

[Fig. 2.4.1 Objects]

[Fig. 2.5.1 Users]

AEIOU SUMMARY

[Fig. 2.6.1 AEIOU Summary]

AEIOU is a heuristic to help interpret observations gathered by ethnographic

practice in industry. Its two primary functions are to code data, and to develop
building blocks of model that will ultimately address the objectives and issue of
client.
3. Canvases

3.1 MIND MAPPING

Mind mapping is a highly effective way of getting information in and out

of your brain. Mind mapping is a creative and logical means of note-taking and
note-making that literally maps out your ideas.
A mind mapping is a visual representation of hierarchical information that
includes a central idea surrounded by connected branches of associated
construction.
All mind maps have some things in common. They have a natural
organizational structure that radiates from center use line, symbols, words, color
and images according to simple, brain-friendly concepts. Mind mapping converts
long list of information into a colorful, memorable and highly organized diagram
that works in line with your brain’s natural way of doing things.

3.2 EMPATHY CANVAS

USERS:

[Fig. 3.2.1 User]

STAKEHOLDER:
● Government
● Traffic Management System

[Fig. 3.2.2 Stakeholders]

After this, we observed activities of stakeholders who are connected with

user. Some of activities are mentioned as following:
[Fig. 3.2.3 Activites]

Then we thought about story.

STORY BOARDING:

Happy story: -

By driving in economy speed, Alex has increased kilometre per liter mileage of his
bike to save fuel and help environment.

Happy story: -

Peter likes to drive with ease on open road without much traffic so he won’t be
tired of travel.

Sad Story: -

Due to heavy traffic and unmanaged traffic system, ambulance can’t arrive in time.
So, Alex died on the spot.

Sad Story: -

In case of emergency, Peter was stuck in heavy traffic jam and could not be able to
do anything until traffic resolved.
[Fig. 3.2.4 Empathy canvas]
3.3 IDEATION CANVAS

First, we mentioned people that interact with construction. We mentioned

stakeholders that used in empathy mapping. New people also we added in that
canvas.

PEOPLE:

[Fig. 3.3.1 People]

After that we mentioned activities of people.

ACTIVITIES:

[Fig. 3.3.2 Activities]

After writing activities we observed activities based on situation, context, and
location.
SITUATION/CONTEXT/LOCATION:

We list out following situation, context and location.

[Fig. 3.3.3 Situation/Context/Location]

After this we list out the props/possible solutions.

PROPS/ POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

[Fig. 3.3.4 Props/ Possible Solutions]

[Fig. 3.3.5 Ideation Canvas]

Problems:

People don’t follow signal because many times road ahead them is empty
and still they have to wait until red light turns green. Problem is that we are still
using old traffic signals that automatically changes traffic signal according to
predefined cycle. So, the idea is to make traffic signals work on traffic flow in
ready area of that signal.
3.4 PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT CANVAS

Now arrive the important part of design process. We have to design a
product based on a key solution. A key solution accordingly to our understanding
was a solution which solves a key problem. Out of many possible solution for
multiple problems that was list down in the ideation phase, we recognize some
problems that if solve would be very easily and quickly.

In this canvas, we mentioned purpose of our domain, product function and

features, product experience, components.
