CONTEXT:
I am an associate attorney at a law firm, and I have been working for this firm for two years. I
have worked on several cases and received positive feedback from clients and senior attorneys.
This has helped me build a reputation for being hardworking and detail-oriented.
I submitted an application for a senior associate position that recently became available. This
position would involve having more responsibilities. This will include handling more complex
cases and mentoring junior attorneys. This position would allow me to develop my legal career
further and potentially become a partner within the firm in the future.
I was informed that I did not receive the promotion. My manager informed me that the decision
was based on a combination of my performance and experience. I am drafting two emails to
send to my manager to express my feelings about the situation.
The first email will be positive, in which I will thank my manager for considering me for the
promotion by expressing my commitment to the firm and my desire to grow and develop my
legal skills.
The second email will be negative, expressing my disappointment at not being selected for the
promotion. I will be seeking feedback on how I could improve to be considered for future
opportunities.
POSITIVE EMAIL:
Dear (Manager),
I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to thank you for considering me, for the senior
associate position. I am disappointed that l was not selected for the promotion, but I understand
that this decision was based on a combination of my performance and experience
I have worked hard on all the cases that I have been assigned. And have received positive
feedback from clients and senior attorneys. but I want to further develop my legal skills. I would
like to gain more experience and improve my performance.
I would be like to learn what specific qualifications the firm is looking for in senior associates so
that I can work on meeting those requirements. Also I would like to schedule a meeting to
discuss feedback on what I can do to improve my performance as an associate attorney, so that
I can be considered for more opportunities in the future
Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Ridhima Malhotra
NEGATIVE EMAIL:
Dear (Manager),
I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to express my appreciation for being considered for
the senior associate position. Although I understand that the decision was based on my
performance and experience, I am extremely disappointed that I was not chosen to receive this
promotion.
I have worked really hard on all the cases I was assigned as an associate attourney, and
received positive feedback from clients and senior attorneys. I believe that would have been the
right fit for the role of senior associate and provided great value to the position.
Moving forward, I would be interested to know what specific qualifications the firm is looking for
in senior associates. I am committed to developing my legal skills to gain the experience
needed to be considered for future opportunities. I would also like to schedule a meeting to
discuss some feedback on areas where I can improve my performance
Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Ridhima Malhotra
