Assignment # 2

The document contains 5 questions related to analysis of variance (ANOVA) for agricultural experiments. Question 1 asks about a factorial experiment shifted to a split plot design. Question 2 involves a layout for an experiment with two factors at multiple levels and replications. Question 3 provides an incomplete ANOVA for a split plot experiment and asks for conclusions and a recommendation for further analysis. Question 4 analyzes factors affecting cracks in a material using a fractional factorial design. Question 5 provides data from a split plot experiment on sugar beets and asks for analysis and interpretation.

Assignment # 02

Attempt all the five Questions.

Q1. i. What will be the gain when 5×7 factorial experiment with 3 replications in CRD
is shifted to a Split Plot Design in CRD.
ii. Give complete layout of the factorial experiment and split plot design in part (i)
Make ANOVA for the two models having only Sources and df in integers.
Q2. In an experiment two factors will be investigated Spray for insecticides having 4 types
and 6 types of fertilizers. The researcher wish to carry the experiment using 3
replications. The total experimental units available are only 15.
i. Make appropriate layout for the above experiment.
ii. Construct ANOVA having sources and df only in integers.

Q3. Two Cultivars and three Inoculation are arranged in split plot design in RCBD. The
experiment was conducted to determine the effects of inoculation with two bacterial strains
on dry weight of two cultivars of perennial grasses. A control treatment (no inoculum) was
also applied to each cultivar. The experiment was replicated in four complete blocks.
Complete the ANOVA (fill in the shaded areas and those with question mark):

Source df SS MS F
Total ? 184.24
Block ? ? 18.64
Cultivar ?
2.68
Inoculation ? 102.90
? 2.05 2.66
Error b ? ? 0.77

F (tab) for the subplot factor is 3.88 and for the whole plot it is 10.13

a) What are your conclusions regarding the effects of cultivar and inoculation treatments on
dry weight of grasses?
b) How would you report the results?
c) The researcher would like to obtain additional harvests from the same plots for several
years. What approach would you recommend for conducting a combined analysis of the
data across years? Explain the rationale for your choice.
Q4. A metal is used to make components for jet turbine aircraft engines. Cracking is a
Potentially serious problem in the final part because it can lead to non-recoverable
failure. A test is run at the parts producer to determine the effect of four factors on
cracks. The four factors are pouring temperature (PT), titanium content (TC), heat
treatment method (HTM), and amount of grain refiner used (GR). Two replicates of a 24
design are run, and the length of crack (in mm ×10-2) induced in a sample coupon
subjected to a standard test is measured.
Estimate of the factors effect are given in the following ANOVA
