Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

During the video/poster project, students are able to showcase their process in solving their given real-
world scenario. Students are engaged in collaboration as they work in groups to complete their
project. With this project having multiple components, students may express their learning through
visual and audio elements to present their learning. They may create a product that involves personal
expression to engage them further with their personal creativity. As students create their project, they
must be very intentional with how they represent their given scenario to ensure that they are thorough
in their reasoning. This process of creating a video and poster also allows students to critically think
and use their creativity when planning and editing their final product. As a requirement of the project
is to vocally highlight important steps and information during their process of solving their scenario,
students will be able to activate their background knowledge. Using this project also allows students
to explore and interact with real world applications of integers.

Lesson idea implementation:
During the lesson, students will be placed into groups of 3-4 students to create a project. The project
will consist of students solving a real-world scenario in which they will represent their answer on a
number line and through two-colored counters. As students create their poster, where they will show
their representations, they will record their process and create an audio component to verbally explain
their process throughout their video. As students are working, the teacher will walk around to groups
to check for understanding and student’s overall progress. This project will be introduced by the
teacher explaining the instructions and rubric for the assignment. The students will present each group
with their scenario that they must solve. The teacher will also discuss the regulations for using
technology within the classroom to prevent internet safety issues. This activity will take students at
least two class periods and possibly some time outsides of class. Students will be informally assessed
as the teacher walks around to observe student’s understanding and work. The students will be
formally assessed by their accuracy, visual representations, and spoken process during their verbal
component, to check for understanding.

The final product of this project will showcase if students have a complete understanding of how to
solve with integers. This will inform the teacher if students are able to move on to solving with
integers involving fractions, decimals, etc. to further explore the solving process and further challenge
students. To extend the lesson, students will continue to complete practice problems individually to
check individual understanding and progress before moving on. The students may also extend their
learning by providing a summary of how the project impacted them, providing the teacher with
feedback on the project idea and if it’s helpful. To conclude the lesson, students may volunteer to
showcase their video with class. The students may provide their classmates with feedback/
constructive criticism on their video presentations as well as the teacher. The teacher will provide
feedback to students when walking around as they are working. The teacher will also provide
feedback during the class discussion, and during grading, using the given rubric to pinpoint specific
aspects that students achieved or missed.
Importance of technology: Why is using a multimedia authoring tool critical to the project? Could
the project be completed without this technology? What would be lost without using it? What other
types of technology, if any, are going to be used in the learning experience?
The multimedia authoring tool, iMovie, is critical to the project as it allows students to record their
step-by-step process of how they solved their given scenario. They are also able to add audio to their
video to further detail their process to thoroughly explain their reasoning and learning. While students
could complete this project without the use of a recording, the project would no longer give students
the ability to thoroughly describe their thought process when solving the scenario. Thus, the teacher
would only see the end result/answer to the group’s scenario which decreases the teacher’s ability to
know students learning and can not be properly informed on if students need more assistance. Also,
during the learning experience, students will use audio to further their use of technology.
Inspiration (optional): If you used existing multimedia projects as a model for your project
(Whether in part or whole), include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you
“borrowed” from others.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

A possible issue that may occur when using iMovie is students misusing their devices and sharing
their projects online without permission. This can be prevented by stating rules prior to students using
the devices and using devices that are school issued, such as iPads, to ensure that the devices block
any inappropriate sites or content from students. iMovie is also an app that does not require access to
any public website to be used, thus the products made on the app are contained within it unless shared

to other platforms by the user. Any issue will also be prevented as students will only showcase their
video within the classroom to preserve their privacy.

Reflective Practice:
The lesson plan was designed to allow students to engage deeply in their product(video) as they went
through planning and creating their project. The activity is student lead and allows students to actively
engage in independent learning as they use their background knowledge and collaboration with peers
to create their product. Because students have created their products independently, students may
remember their learning better as they reflect on their own understanding of the material. This product
also provides students with a tool to review in the future, when needing to refer to their step-by-step
process in solving a scenario. To further extend the lesson, students may be provided with
independent practice work with scenarios to formatively assess their individual process. Students may
use various websites, such as Khan Academy to complete practice problems for further learning.
