Pool Party - Shortverse
P1- it is about a teenage girl who has a significant scar on her stomach, but Nika (the girl) prefers it
to go unnoticed and hidden until she gets a pool party invitation that helps her over comes her
insecurities and to help others get over there's too after Nika had some words of encouragement
from her mom, calling her scar a ‘battle scar’.
P2- This short film ‘pool party’ comes under the genre Drama and the convection is this genre is teen
drama as it represents this through starring young people who are going through age specific issues.
In this genre you will expect to see young people uncomfortable with their body or getting bullied by
the other characters within the short film. These are included because it shows that people of that
generation what could happen if they overcome these feelings. We see this in the short film when
Nika was uncomfortable with her scar then she over comes this and lets another girl see the scar and
the other girl thinks it is cool. They do this to make the girl feel better about her body and help the
audience to become connected with her as them as an audience has insecurities that they need to
get over.
P3- This short film does apply Todorov theory as there is an Equilibrium, Disruption, disequilibrium,
resolution, new state of equilibrium. In this short film, it follows the Todorov theory as it starts of as
been a normal thing that she covers her scar but then as the film progresses, she finds that she
becomes more uncomfortable in their body and hate it before she becomes comfortable creating a
new state of equilibrium. This is conventional to the genre since the generation that have starred in
this movie has these types of problems and sometimes doesn’t even get to the point of new state of
equilibrium due to the fact that people don’t know how to deal with their situation and therefore
can’t get past the disequilibrium. This stage is evident because it allows the audience to be able to
see where things go wrong within this short film. You can tell this by watching through this short flim
and looking to see where the new states happen, for an example stage 2 : disruption (when
something goes wrong) this is when Nika gets invited to the pool party this is because we start to see
her initial worry about the party. The disequilibrium stage which is the peak of the film which has no
normality is shown when Nika is trying on all her different swimsuits and is not feeling comfortable
with in her own body. The Resolution to this is when her mum buys her a bikini and states to her
that it is a battle scar and gives her a hype up. The new state of equilibrium is when. She is in the
changing room, and she is showing off her scar and then the person who is doing the pool party
comments on it in a nice way. These stages are necessary has it helps the audience see that Nika has
grown above her problem and that now can be confident with in her body and doesn’t put her scar
to shame.
P4- The cinematography with in this short film helps the character to get their message across to the
audience, the camera is used conventionally to be able to help portray the way that the girl is
thinking. In the first example is when she is in the changing room and it is a wide angle of the whole
changing room, everyone is getting change and looks happy. This shot is done throughout the short
film to show how everyone is changing and feeling something different. This impacts the short flim
as it shows the audinece how badly her insecurities and how because of these insecurities this shot
helps us see how different she is to the other people in that room. This is done in many other flims
and teen dramas for example waterloo road they will have a wide shot of the people in the class and
let the audience figure out who was the person that was going through something or hurting with
out anyone knowing. This is convetioal to this genre as i think using a wide shot to be able to
compare other peopel with in that scene to the main character to show how badly they are
struggling. Another camera shot they used was a close up of the fact that switched Prescriptives
from looking straight at her to looking at the mirror at her. This shot was used when she was trying
on her swimsuits, this helps the audience see what she is feeling. This tells us that the charater is
frustrated and doesn’t like the way she looks because of they way she is looking at herself with in
the mirror. This is done in other movies to show how characters are feeling through there
perspective so that they can connect with the audience more. This helps for the generation that is
watching this to relate to what the characters are feeling.
P5- The mise en scene is the props, costumes, location and lighting that goes in to the short film to
help it tell the story. There is only 2 locations of this whole short film which is the changing rooms
and her bedroom this helps to create significant with in the scene as it means that that these are the
main places she feels these insecurities. The reasons that these locations is because it helps to
impact the scene by showing the audience that even though you are in a safe place the worst
thoughts can be when you are alone in your room. Just by the character being in her room and
seeing the way she walked in to there you can tell that she is not in the best of moods and she is
mad and upset about something. This type of location being the bedroom is shown in many teen
dramas and the reason people do it is to be able to show there characters personally and changes
that they are going through in their own personal space such as there bedroom. Most teen drama
has at least one scene where they are in there bedroom as it helps to show off there personality and
where they feel safe so this is convectional to this genre. The costumes in this short film also help to
impact the short film as many teen age girls do so of the time don’t like there clothes or there body.
By Nika the main character putting on multiple swimsuit it helps the people watch to relate to her as
girls do have a struggle to find what to wear and end up not feeling good in what they choose. In this
scene the charater is feeling very insecure and not confident with in her body and this is why she is
so upset in this scene. This type of scene is seen in many movies that have the genre of teen drama
such as the Kissing Booth the main character is trying to decide what to wear for a party and is going
through her whole wardrobe to find something she would be comfortable wearing. This is
conventional to this genre as it is directly related back to the audience and there struggles.
P6- editing is use conventionally as it help to show what the character is like from many different
perspectives, by cutting the clips to show her trying on different swimwear, this helps the audience
understand that she has so many options and she doesn’t like any of them because of her body. By
doing thsi it helps the audience understand how she is being affected by this scar and how she want
to portray her body. The clips that are made are fast takes which mean that the clips have been cut
short and quickly, this helps to show her struggles within her body. This is convectional to this genre
as it show that there is lots of fazes a girl goes through.
P7- In this short film they use music and diegetic sound to show what Nika is feeling, this is used
conventionally due to the fact that having music playing over a stressed-out scene helps the
audience understand what is happening and how they feel by the tone of the music along with her
voice. In the changing rooms at the start of the it is just talking and there is some light music which
helps to bring the atmosphere of a busy changing room and helps us get an idea of what could be
happening with in the short flim. When do thid it shows the audience what the impact that feelings
have on the scene and how it can change the mood of the scene. Music is also used with in the
bedroom scene when she is trying on her swimsuits.
Paradox Protocol | Shortverse crime/action
P1- The short film is about an undercover cop who has managed to harnesses the power of a time
loop to take on a dangerous drug deal, he will exploit this extraordinary ability to be able to bring
down the dangerous gangsters, he will use this power to look at many ways that it could pan out and
then worked out the best way around this for him.
P2- The main genre in this movie is Action and crime as it involves at dangerous drug deal and there
is an undercover cop which helps to explain how it is a crime short film. This means that there needs
to be some sort of indication that that main character is a cop which this is shown through the radio
telling him what his brief is for this mission and helping him overcome these drug dealers. The other
genre in this short film is action as this is the focus of the short film as there are small clips of a fight
and the undercover cop getting shot then he blows the drug dealers up. This then applies to the
audience that they are fighting and there is some crime going on that is why it is these genres.
P3- This short film does not apply to Todorov's theory due to the fact it is having jumping around due
to the power that the undercover cop has to be able to move around in time. For the majority of the
short film the film is at the state of Disequilibrium as there is no normality in what the cop is doing
due to how he has harnessed time and is able to jump around in it and go back to stop things from
happening, which is an abnormal event to happen, therefore it is the peak of the short film. At the
end of the short film the cop comes to the conclusion that there would be no outcome that he
would stay alive unless he was the one to kill them, so he plants a bomb in the briefcase that they
take so that it then creates that new state of equiliburm to get things sort of back to normal and to
have the main character alive and ready for the next mission. This is convectional to these genres
because there is points that the audience doesn’t know what is going to happen in the state of
disequilibrium so therefore it helps the audience stay focused on the short film and intrigued about
what is going to happen.
P4- The cinematography that they have used in this short film helps to show how important this
mission is and how dangerous it is. In this film they have used lots of close ups and lots of drone shot
so that they are able to see the cops reactions and then there movement and where they are going
with in the scene, also they do this so that the audience can have a wider picture of what is
happening around the main character and intrigue the audience to watch out for any danger that
maybe around. The first close up that was used was on the walkie talkie to tell the audience about
the mission that the undercover cop had to carry out by himself. By having this close up at the start
of the movie it showed to the audience how important this mission was and how dangerous it could
be just because of the close up and how loud the voice was coming from the walkie talkie. This
impacted the scene by leaving the audience not knowing what was going to happen and making that
question what i going to happen to the undercover cop. The next close up that i think was important
was the one where he had the walkie talkie up to his ear and it showed that back of his head, i found
this to be significant as i help the audience start to see his emotions toward this mission and how
there was a possible thought that he didn’t want to do it. The other types of shots are the Drone
birds eye view shots, these shots are very good to help the audience know the area that they
undercover cop is and how he is handling the situations.
P5- The mise en scene that is used in the short film such as the costumes, props, location and
lighting are all very significant with in this piece but there is a couple thing that stand out to help
make this film in the genre crime and action. The Props that stand out to me is the walkie talkie and
the briefcase as these are very commonly seen in these types of movies, walkie talkies mainly in
action and briefcase mainly in crime so they cross over nicely. That being said to means that
conventionally these props are used often in these types of movies so the audience will be able to
recognise them and then look toward these types of genres. By having the opening scene be a image
of the prop of the walkie talkie helps to create a thought around it before any of the word are said as
it makes the audience think of what the possibilities that the walkie talkie could mean to someone.
The other prop is the briefcase which seen in crime movies, but by having the briefcase in this short
film and it having fake money in for a drug deal helps us recognise the significance of that he is a cop
and that this could all go wrong in an instant. The location of the movie is every significance due to
the fact he is doing a drug deal, so the locations are very key in showing this, the first location we see
is an apartment which is the undercover cop's house/ hideout. This implies to the audience that it is
his safe place, and he can’t be hurt there. But then we see that the end of the movie that it is not his
safe place, but this location helps us as the audience to see what the undercover cop's life kind of
like is. The other location for this short film is a deserted sand area with no buildings or anything
around. This shows us as the audience that the people that he is meeting doesn’t want to be see and
noticed about the drug deal. This impacts the audience as it shows to them that the undercover cop
is in danger, and no one will know about it.
P6- The editing in this movie shows to the audience how the undercover cop uses his power to cut
across time and go back in time to a different paradox, this edit is called a cut reverse cut so that
means that there is one shot of something then a different shot then it goes back to the other shot.
This is done when we see the shot of the cop in the apartment then it flips to a scenario then back to
the cop in the apartment. This is done to show how the cop is manipulating time and testing out the
different types of scenarios that could possible happen.
P7- the Sound in this short film, the music has shown that it added drama and tension to the move
movement that is happening that is on the screen. The music helps the audience to focus on what is
happening, also there is a lot of talking through the walkie talkie stating the mission over and over
again. This help the audience recognises the importance of the mission, and by it repeating over and
over again make the audience more worried for the character.
Kinetic | Shortverse
P1- The short film is about how a person owns a mechanics and his brother works for him as it used
to be there fathers. In the work shop they have a magical lightning bolt in jar to help fix the cars, but
then an old customer comes in looking for their dad and the oldest son wants to fix it with the
lightning bolt where the youngest wants to fix it the normal way. But when going to fix the car with
the lightning bolt there was none. So, the boy tried to go collect some by hold the jar up into the sky,
it failed. But the youngest brother managed to fix the cars the normal way.
P2- This short film is in the genre fantasy and SCI-FI which it 2 genres you would normally see
together as they both contrast very well together. In the main genre fantasy the audience expects to
see something that would never be real in their world like the lightning bolt. Things like this are
included so that the audience watching the movie can see something that they have never seen
before also they would want to see something that is different to other movies. With in Sci-fi the
main thing to do with this genre is the fact that the lightning bolt actually fixed the cars so there for
it is kind of science in a way. By seeing both these genres combined it meant for the audience that
they are very overwhelmed by what is happening and how the lightning bolt works.
P3- this short film does apply to Todorov's theory as it goes through all the stages of it, from the
equilibrium, disruption, disequilibrium, resolution and new state of equilibrium. This is convectional
as in most fantasy movies/ short films they have a problem that goes wrong and the have to sort it
because something relies on it. for example, in this short film they relied on the lightning bolt to be
able to fix the cars so no one would have to do any work. The first stage is the equilibrium stage
which it at the start of the movie and they lightning bolt is working perfectly fine, and all the cars are
getting fixed. Then the disruption happens and in this short film the disruption is the part where an
old customer of their dads come it looking for a repair and only wants his dad to do it. Then it is the
disequilibrium which is the part where the oldest boy to a deal to fix the car in 20 minutes but then
the boy goes to get the lightning bolt and the 2 boys fight over it and then the lightning bolt doesn’t
work at all. The resolution state of this movie is that the older boy goes out to try and capture a
piece of lighting where the younger boy is acutely the one that is making things right by fixing the
car. The new state of equilibrium is when the boy walks out of the shop after fixing the man's car
then the older brother sees how doing it the normal way works just fine and better.
P4- The cinematography in this short film at the start of the movie there was a lot of close up shot of
the cars and the lightning bolt, by doing this help to symbolise what the movie is about and what
could happen in the short film. This is conventional to the genre due to the fact it helps to add
drama and power to the scene, also by starting off with this montage of these close-up shots help to
connect the short film to the genre as these types of shots are in many fantasies and sci-fi. These
shots don’t really have to characters in it so i don’t have the character is going through that this
point in time, all i can tell for this shot is that he seems powerful with the lightning bolt. The other
shots that are used are wide shot and this is used when one of the tryest to catch the lightning bolt
in the contain and failed. In this scene it showed to the audience that he is weak and that he should
not be the one in charge of the shop. In the other wide shot, which is nearer to the end of the movie
it shows the youngest boy saying about how to do this the old-fashioned way of mechanics and then
taking charge of the shop due to the fact that the older boy had no clue how to fix a car without the
lightning bolt. This impacts the scene as it means that the audience gets to see the boy's reaction to
him accualty fixing a car without the lightning bolt, also it means that they audience can feel like
they are involved in the scene as they are witnessing what is happening. I think in this scene the
characters are feeling very different just because the youngest is probably feeling very proud and
good about himself whereas the older one might be feeling frustrated and upset that he could not
get it to work.
P5- The mise en scene in this short movie is very important because the film revolves around the
lightning bolt and its container and this helps to make up the movie, it would not be a fantasy or a
sci-fi without it. This is the main prop in this film just due to the fact that it is a fantasy object, this
prop was used pretty consistently throughout the film due to the fact that it is the thing that was
broken and needed fixing. The impacts it had on the scenes it had was that it always drew your focus
to it because it was so bright and consistently on the scene so therefore as an audience we wanted
to know more. The location of the movie was based with a car mechanics shop, this gives a almost
background story to the guy we first see on the screen as the audience can almost guess to what the
story is. This is important to the audience as it makes a big impact as it is it is the most seen scene in
the short film; therefore the audience will become connected to that location so when there is
change of location to outside the shop it becomes almost unsettling to the audience.
P6- The editing techniques that have been used in the beginning of the short film there is a montage
of clips, and these are all fast takes, and they are not on the screen for very long. By doing this at the
start of the movie it means that there is lots of clips to build up the story and background to the
shop and to the lightning bolt. The other editing techniques is that was used was slow takes which
means that the characters have more screen time, so they get to build up their story more while
trying to overcome this situation with the lightning bolt.
P7- The sound that has been included with in the short film helps to represent the voices and the
way that the lightning bolt works. By using these sounds helped the audience to understand what is
going on in the short film by the use of diegetic sound. This impacts that audience as they will
becoming attached to the characters and this story. This is convectional to the genre as this impacts
the way the audience and to be able to create this fantasy, they need allow the audience to create
that connection through speech. The sound that the lightning bolt make helps to attract the
audience's attention and make the audience feel like they want to watch more to do with this type
of movie.
