Adsorption of Methylene Blue on Activated Carbon

Objective
To measure the adsorption capacity of methylene blue using activated carbon
Equipment and materials
 Methylene blue
 Activated carbon
 Falcon tubes
 Mechanical shaker
 Spectrophotometer

Experimental Procedure
1. Prepare a methylene blue (MB) solution with concentration of 50 ppm.
2. Add 0.75, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 mg of activated carbon (AC) in different falcon tubes.
3. Pour 50 mL of methylene blue solution (50 ppm) in each falcon tube.
4. Place the falcon tubes on mechanical shaker for 1 hr.
5. Measure the absorbance of sample taken from each falcon tube after 1 hr.
6. Calculate the concentration of methylene blue using the calibration curve.

Calibration curve
Prepare methylene blue solutions in DI water (0.25, 0.50, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40,
50 ppm). Then measure the absorbance of each solution using a spectrophotometer.
