Course Title: The Restructured Community Organiza on

Capacity Building Assignment (40%)


Due: Weeks 12, 13 & 14 (11:59 Type of assignment: Groups

This is a group assignment. Students will be split into 7 groups and required to complete the following:

STEP 1
The Na onal Survey of Nonpro t and Voluntary Organiza ons has iden ed 7 key areas in which NGOs
need to build their capacity. They include:

1. Communicate the Value of The Sector

Each group will select one of the categories iden ed above (groups cannot duplicate topics). Once you
have selected a category, provide an in-depth discussion as to the major challenges experienced within
this category. For example, what are the causes of the problem, what is the impact of the problem, and
how does this problem manifest within the NGO sector? Once you have provided a thorough overview of
the problem, conduct a literature review outlining approaches to address the problems you iden ed. A
minimum of six (6) resources should be consulted and at least three (3 of those resources should be
from peer-reviewed sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journals, ins tu onal reports, and government
documents). You can group your ndings into major themes you see emerging in the literature.

PART 1: DUE WEEK 12 (10%)

1. Students will present an outline of the ndings that will include the complete
bibliography of the sources to be used for the literature review.

PART 2: DUE WEEKS 13 & 14 (30%)


Present your ndings in a group presenta on format (using a PowerPoint presenta on to underscore the
most important points). Presenta ons should be 15 minutes and must include the following:

1. Iden fy the capacity-building category your group selected.

2. Provide an overview of the category including its major challenges.

3. Provide a review of the literature and its major recommenda ons regarding how to
build the capacity of NGOs to address the challenges iden ed. The review must include
a summary of the source and speci c relevant quotes from the ar cles/sources you have
read, in addi on to a summary of the source.
