Reflections: DIFFERENT by Tahneek Rahman
This five-minute short film introduces the main two characters, Emily and Sam, in an outdoor
setting who are both clearly unaware of each other’s differences. As the opening continues,
the spectators gain an insight into Emily’s feelings about Sam (exposition) and how she wants
the friendship to grow; shown when Emily repeatedly chucks different notes down the back
of Sam’s top, midway through her runs.
Emily attempts to create a friendship with Sam, who is actually unaware of what really
happened. Emily tries to open up the conversation space through a piece of mail like in the
picture above. However, his efforts are ignored by Sam because Sam never responds to what
Emily does.
Until one day, Emily tried to get closer to Sam. Later, Emily falls off her skateboard in front
of Sam, arguably to grab his attention away from what he was doing, onto her. This can be
the inciting incident that initiates their connection, however, when Emily falls off, Sam is
quick to ask, “Yo, are you okay?” but Emily freaks out when he doesn’t physically help her
up. This creates a further conflict between the two characters due to Emily’s
misunderstanding and judgement about Sam, who is unable to walk.
After Emily runs off due to her embarrassment, she looks through a bush back at Sam. This is
where Sam is to be seen getting help back into his wheelchair which is the climax, as it is the
point in the story where Emily now realized she has made a mistake and arguably regretting
her decision for running off. In my opinion, I think it is Emily’s emotions of guilt, and even
shame, come through more intensely.
As the resolution at the end of the short film appears, Emily and Sam are both sat back on the
bench with each-other, creating this cyclical structure but only with a different interaction.
Sam hands Emily two pieces of paper, then signs “Sorry” to her. This form of
communication, sign language, only escalates the meaning that Rahman wanted to originally
create and stated, “With this film, I wanted to share a message that despite our differences,
we can all still live in a world where we can work together for the greater good.” Sam
changes his actions once understanding Emily’s difference to make their friendship at an
equilibrium. This ending feels complete as both characters, but especially Emily, get what
they wanted which is to start a friendship. Moreover, this ending is happy due to the
characters possibly also getting what they both have needed; for someone not to judge them
based on their differences and to accept them for who they are.
At the end, the creator describes his short film, worded by discoverology, about “A deaf girl
comes across a boy who is paralyzed from the waist-down, but neither of them knows about
each other’s differences.” Personally, this short film tells us about do not expect, only accept.
It means that when you assume people are mean, you are often mistake. We need to give
people more changes. They often have good reason for what they do. And the last, you just
never know what someone’s capabilities or limitations might be, but everyone has something
good to offer, very impactful and simple manner. This short film is amazing and memorable
because I did not expect the storylines could be. Sometimes we only see the actions of people
on the outside without knowing why they do it, “they only cared for the inside, not the
outside”
Reflections:
Actually, to know what is characteristic or what makes us feel unique is to know ourselves
more deeply and have a sense of pride in what we already have in ourselves. There is a lot of
uniqueness in me and I am proud that I am different. It is okay not to be the same as the
others, be proud who you are. Perhaps, there are many things that other people don't know
about me because only I can know and feel it. Also, there are many differences, whether due
to background or habits that sometimes make me feel different from others. And that's okay.I
accepted the low or high of myself and I can deal it. Even though, sometimes I felt insecure,
left behind others, not beautiful, nor smart. But I know that I have been created from the best
shapes and forms, so I must be more grateful. Because only by “grateful” we will be relieved
by everything that happens. Only by being grateful can we restrain all our desires and feel
satisfied with what we have. Just be proud of yourself, be the best version of yours. And I
always try to make my parents be happy and proud of me.
