Problem 1 (60 points). This problem will be used to assess the competence SIQ0202; to achieve the
latter, you require at least 40/60 points.
Nitrogen (N2) is to be cooled by cold water in a double-pipe counterflow heat exchanger. Nitrogen
enters (annulus side) the heat exchanger at 90 °C at a rate of 1500 ft3/h (1 atm, 21 °C), while water
enters (tube side) at 22°C at a rate of 10 ft3/h.
a) Determine the outlet temperatures for the hot and cold fluid.
For your calculations, use the specifications from your experiment:
To determine the hot and cold fluid temperatures I used the NTU method meaning that first I
calculated the Cmin and Delta Tmax using finding that the Cmin is 14.3W and Delta Tmax is
68C, I could calculate my Qmax which was 973W with these I used the effectiveness of our
heat exchanger that we got from experimental results which is 0.4044 with this I could get my
real Q by multiplying the effectiveness with our Qmax getting 393.48W, having our Q I could
get the outlet temperatures of the cold and hot fluid which were 23.19C and 62.48 respectively
.
Problem 2 (30 puntos). This problem will be used to assess the competence SIQ0204; to achieve the
latter, you require at least 18/30 points.
Following the experiment setup and procedure of Experiment 1 in this course, some students collected
the following results for one run using natural convection:
Estimate the natural convection coefficient and Nusselt number for this data. Explain and justify your
answer.
Nusselt number=0.0000254
Natural convection coefficient=3.9W/m2K
Using the same system that we use in the experiment we already have the Reynolds number and
Prandlt number since it is a constant number in the excel that we previously used we got the nusselt
number very fast after which we can estimate the natural convection with the nusselt number
The value of each specific part or question in a problem or exercise is equal to the value of the
problem or exercise divided by the number of parts or questions.
If the problem has no procedure, the total points for the problem are deducted.
If the problem does not have the procedure for a specific part or question, the equivalent
points of the problem are deducted.
If the problem has a procedure:
o If the proposed procedure is correct but the result is incorrect (calculation error): -2
points (this applies to intermediate procedures that are required to determine the final
answer).
o If the proposed procedure is incorrect in addition to the result (the concept is incorrect): -4
points (this applies to intermediate procedures that are required to determine the final
answer).
o Additionally, if a final answer does not have the corresponding units: -2 points.
