Tutorial - 04

The document contains 8 questions about calculating capacitance values for various overhead power line configurations. It includes both single and three phase lines with different conductor arrangements, radii, heights above ground, and lengths. Formulas for capacitance, reactance, and charging current are required to solve the problems.

TUTORIAL - 04

Q1. The horizontally spaced conductors of a single-phase line operating at 50hz are having outside
diameter of 1.6cm and the spacing between the centers of conductors is 6m. The permittivity of
free space is 8.854*10-12 f/m. Calculate the capacitance to ground per km of each line.
Q2 A 220 kV, 50 Hz, 200 km long 3 phase line has its conductors on the corners of a triangle with
sides 6m, 6, and 12m. The conductor radius is 1.81cm. Calculate
i) capacitance per phase per km,
ii)capacitive reactance per phase.
iii)charging current per phase.
ii)total charging megavolt-amperes.

Q3. Calculate the capacitance to neutral per km of a single-phase line with conductor radius 1cm
spaced 3.5m apart and 8m above the ground with and without considering the effect of earth.
Q4. A single-phase line 50 km long, having conductors with radius of 0.25 cm are separated by
1.5 m and are lying 7 m above the ground. Find the capacitance of the line.
Q5. In a 3 phase, 3 wire system the conductors are arranged in a horizontal plane with spacing
D13 = 4m, D12=2m=D23. Conductors are transposed having diameter of 2.5cm. The ratio of
mutual GMD to self GMD =?

Q6. A 3-phase, 50 Hz, 66kV overhead line conductors are placed in a horizontal plane. The
conductor’s diameter is 1.25 cm. If the line length is 100 km. Calculate: -
• Capacitance per phase
• Charging current per phase
Assuming complete transposition of the line and the distance between phase A and B is 2m and
from B and C is 2.5m.

Q7. A 1-Φ transmission line made of bundle conductors forward path and return path both has
two conductors all arranged horizontally at a height of 15m from ground. Forward path
conductors are of radius 3cm and spaced by 1m and return path conductors are of radius 4cm
and spaced by 1m, and spacing between two nearest conductors of forward and return path is
5m. Find the capacitance of both path with considering the effect of earth.

Q8. A conductor, made of 7 strands each of radius 1mm, is at a height of 10m from ground. Find
the capacitance of this conductor with the ground.
