ECO FUEL – LATEST EURO REGULATIONS – ENGINE OIL TOP-UP
• European legislation, which sets a cap on emissions of 95 grams of CO2 per kilometre for all new vehicles delivered
from 2021, is forcing vehicle manufacturers to demand increasingly low viscosity engine oils (e.g. 0W)
• A less viscous engine oil can help reduce CO2 emissions. It creates less friction which means that the demand for
engine power is reduced, which consumes less energy. Less friction means lower fuel consumption and therefore
lower CO2 emissions.
• Modern engines are designed to run within a specific operating temperature range in order to control emissions, fuel
consumption and engine performance. In addition to aspects concerning cutting CO2 emissions, each manufacturer
also defines specifications for each engine to strike the optimum balance between fuel economy and engine
protection, in order to guarantee the engine's performance and service life
• There has been a rise in the number of specifications as a result of each manufacturer having their own strategies.
