2. General Characteristics
The Zootec Double II is a pneumatic vaccinator that
ensures an automatic vaccination of day-of-age
poultry birds (chickens, ducks, turkeys, guinea fowls,
etc.) via subcutaneous injection in the neck. It is

tion is 2,500 chicks per hour. The machine requires
external supply of compressed air with a pressure
comprised between 6 to 8 bars (85-120 psi). Pressure
will then be regulated to 5-6 bars (73-85 psi) inside
the machine.

Case and Cover

Using fabricated stainless steel for the case and ABS
plastic for the rear cover, the Zootec Double II model
is more ergonomically designed and easily cleaned.

Pneumatic drive unit and syringe

The pneumatic cylinder provides a powerful
driving force for the system. The unit
contains a shock absorber to eliminate
excessive pressure on vaccine in the syringe.
It is designed for trouble-free operations to
rhythmically and effectively operate over a
wide range of air pressures with the capability
of 5,000 cycles per hour. With the unit in
good operating condition, it can vaccinate up
to 3,000 chicks per hour with either a chick
belt or a box of 100 chicks at a time. Normal
operating pressure is 5-6 bars (73-85 psi).

specified, the Zootec is supplied with syringes that
deliver a fixed volume of 0.1 ml to 0.5 ml depending
on the piston size using water or oil-based vaccines.
Method I: Single injection
Half-dosage fixed volume syringes such as a 0.15 ml
dose are also available upon request. Any syringe
change does not require new machine settings.

Pneumatic control unit:

These settings are important to ensure a good injection quality from the syringes
and should also be taken into account anytime an air cylinder or associated part is
replaced.

The batch counter (ZT02) permits you to count the quantity of chicks per box. Press
the upper button (1) and simultaneously preselect the number on the counter using

the lower buttons (2). When the number is reached, the machine will emit an air
signal inside the machine and will stop functioning. Press the reset counter push
button (ZT14) on the top cover to restart the machine. Pressing the batch counter
(1) can also restart the machine.
2

The totalizer counter (ZT03) is used for totalization of daily vaccinations. The totalizer
counter can be reset to zero at the beginning of each vaccination period by pushing
the reset button (1).

8. Priming the Syringe

Installation and removal of the syringes:

A) Loosen the syringe holder nut then gently lift the lid
clamp of the connector syringe (ZT21B). Hold the
A B primary syringe by the syringe end piece (ZT83M)
and create a gap between the syringe piston end
and the connector syringe (ZT21B).

B) The primary syringe can then be carefully taken

out of its housing by holding it with both hands.
Once the syringe is safely removed then close the
lid clamp of the connector syringe (ZT21B).

Remove the secondary syringe by following step B.

To reposition the syringes, the steps mentioned above will be repeated in the reverse order, using both hands
to reinsert the syringes.

Important: With the primary syringe safely

installed and fastened in place, make sure there
is no free play between the syringe end piece
(ZT83M) and the syringe holder (ZT21B).

The dose can be verified by measuring the volume collected in a graduated test vial

If the dose is incorrect:

• Check for air or dirt in the front of the syringe.
• Check to see if the piston gasket is damaged.
Solution: Clean or replace

Very important: Make sure the O-rings, kit springs, tac valves and fiber washers are changed after
50,000 injections and the syringe is kept clean.

v.030315 9
9. Adjusting the Needle Position (and the Injection Level
and Depth)
Place the needle on the syringe.

Close the machine lid and supply the machine with compressed air. Turn the on/off test switch (ZT367) to the on
position and adjust the pressure to 5-6 bars (73-85 psi). The operator should be twice as careful to avoid any
injury from needle movements.

The syringe will thrust forward and lock into the injection position (see picture).

Extended position: the needle should always be at the center of the needle hole in the cover. If it is not
centered, adjust by loosening the hinge screws on the cover on the front of the machine.

Injection position:
Needle position adjustments must be made
with the needle in the injection position:

The tip of the needle must be oriented toward the

chick’s neck.

Injection point:

The needle length To adjust the point of injection, move the twin touch
is 14-18 mm plate by loosening the two screws (ZT410) that
holds the plate to the lid. Raising the twin touch
plate on the lid will lower the point of injection
in the bird and lowering it will raise the point of
injection. The position of the twin touch plate may
vary slightly depending on the size of the chicks and
operator skill level. There should be a 2-3 mm gap
between the needle and the side button.
2-3 mm

Injection depth/needle length:

ZT911
To adjust the length, move the syringe holder
(ZT311NS) by loosening the two screws (ZT911).
To extend the needle length: advance the syringe
holder (ZT311NS) forward 1 to 3 mm maximum
from center. To reduce the needle length: slide
the syringe holder (ZT311NS) back 1 to 3 mm
maximum. The length of the needle should be
14-18 mm.

adjustment.

10. Vaccinating Day-Old Chicks by Subcutaneous Injection
in the Neck
Seize the chick at the base of its neck with your left hand. With your right hand, hold the chick’s body and
stretch the neck gently. Position the bird on the machine. The head of the chick must be positioned so that it
pushes against both of the buttons in the twin touch plate. (see picture)

Injection is triggered when both of the buttons in

the twin touch plate are pushed simultaneously.
The top of the chick’s head is pushed against the
top button and the neck of the chick is pushed
against the side button as the operator positions
the chick using their right index finger. Always keep
fingers straight.
After vaccination, the right hand releases the chick
which falls into a container (chick box) signaling that
the injection is complete. Do not move the chick
away from the needle until the injection is complete.

NOTE: The image shows the twin touch plate tip

removed. The tip can be easily removed for more
skilled operators to better simulate the old style
retention plate.

The quality of vaccination can be controlled by examining the necks of the birds vaccinated with a dye for water-
based vaccines. Using a dye is unnecessary for oil-based vaccines, which are generally of a pearly white color
and clearly visible under the skin.

The dye enables visualization of the injection site in the chick’s neck.

Before starting each vaccination, always inject 20 chicks and verify if the vaccination quality is correct. Observe
the chicks for 10 minutes to confirm that there is no discomfort or injury to the chick, or leakage of the vaccine.

Important: If the injection site is too close to the head, then move the twin touch plate up towards
the top of the machine. Recheck injection.
