What I Need to Know

Hello learners! This module is designed and written for you. The scope of this
module helps you a lot in maintaining measuring instruments. It can improve your
mathematical skills and logical capabilities. Moreover, it will also help you
understand the importance of a system of measurement in the field of electronics
product assembly and servicing. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence directed to the achievement of two or more learning objectives as shown
below:

Content Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of the underlying

principles in measurements and calculations in line with job
requirements.

Performance Standard: The learners shall be able to perform mensuration and

calculation in line with job requirements

Module 7: LO 7. Maintain measuring instruments (TLE_IAPAS9-12PMC-Ij-11)

After going through this module, you are expected to:

LO 3 Maintain measuring
instruments

What I Know

Hello everyone! As a junior electronic technician, let us determine how

much you already know about maintaining measuring instruments.

Let’s check your familiarity with the activities presented below. The
result of the pre-assessment will determine your prior knowledge of the
measuring instruments. Let’s start!

Activity 7.1: Pick the device, use the instrument!

What do you think is the best measuring instrument for the following?
Let’s help Momoy and Maymay how to handle the measuring instruments.
Try to match a measuring tool in column B with its corresponding
illustration in column A. Write only the letter of your answer on your answer
sheet or in your activity notebook.

1. A.

6
2. B.

3.

C.

4.

5.

That was a bit challenging but very engaging, wasn’t it? Now that you are
already familiar with some ways to handle and to use the measuring instruments,
let’s do better with some other activities as you go along.
7
What’s In

ACTIVITY 7.2: MIND YOUR OWN TOOL

Do you still remember the functions of the different measuring tools in

electronics? If you do, fill in the uses of each instrument in your activity
notebook.

Very good, certainly you still know the functions of the measuring
instruments, which is good for a Grade 7/8 students like you. If you want to be well-
versed with more measuring tools and how these are being handled, cleaned and
stored. Continue reading!

What’s New

BRING ME TO MY ROOM

Maintaining measuring instruments is not that easy, they should be kept

carefully and protected. Can you bring them to their proper storage? Arrange the
instruments to their respective tool cab. Write the letter which corresponds to
your answer. Write your answer on your activity notebook.

A.

Good job! You are a very promising junior technician in your

own right! Why don’t you challenge yourself with
some more tasks ahead?

What is It

Electronic Measuring Instruments

Measuring instruments in electronics are confined only to analog

testers and sometimes digital millimeter. Either way, the maintenance of
these instruments is a priority in all electronics laboratory rooms.
Aside from hand tools, measuring instruments are also needed for more
accurate and quality output. In this connection, three of the most used
instruments are presented here for you to be familiar with their uses and the
proper way of maintaining them.
Volt-Ohm-Milliammeter. It is an equipment that combines three
functions: as a voltmeter that measures both ac and dc voltages; an
ohmmeter that measures resistance; and milliammeter that measures the
small amount of dc current. As for safety precautions in the maintenance of
this instrument, the following should be observed

VOLT – OHM - Millimeter

Always rest the function switch at 250V AC, if an OFF position is not
available in the instrument.
For current and voltage measurements, always set the function
switch in the correct setting which is a little higher than the expected current
or voltage present in the circuit.
Place the instrument in a cool dry place, away from any magnetic
devices, and free from vibrations.

11
Oscilloscope. An oscilloscope (commonly abbreviated CRO, for
cathode-ray oscilloscope, or scope) is a piece of electronic test equipment that
allows signal voltages to be viewed, usually, as a two-dimensional graph of
one or more electrical potential differences (vertical axis) plotted as a function
of time or some other voltage (horizontal axis).

OSCILLOSCOPE

A signal generator is a device that produces simple waveforms.

SIGNAL GENERATOR.

Such devices contain an electronic oscillator, a circuit that is capable

of creating a repetitive waveform. These are typically used in simple
electronics repair and design; where they are used to simulate a circuit under
test.
Oscilloscope and signal generator should be given regular check-ups
for at least once a week by connecting them to the power line. This will help
prevent their components from having moisture that might cause trouble in
their circuits.
In any activity involving skills, it is a standard procedure that you
must always use the right tool or equipment properly that would fit in a
12
particular task. Despite this reminder or caution, some students abuse the
use of tools and still practice the following common faults that must NOT be
done.
This is the sample of storing of the electronic measuring instruments.
In the tool cabinet always consider the weight level of the device in keeping
on the cabinet tool to avoid an accident as presented in the picture below.

What’s More

ACTIVITY 7.3: WHAT IS ALL ABOUT MY TOOL?

Alright! When using electronic measuring instruments, things can
be complicated! Like humans, these instruments are also stressed out when
they are not in proper condition. Can you maintain the functionality of the
following measuring instruments? Identify the proper handling, cleaning,
and storing of the following measuring instruments. Write your answer in
your activity notebook.

What I Have Learned

MEASURING INSTRUMENTS FOR THOUGHT

Okay! At this point, we are going to measure the maintenance of our
measuring instruments.
Let us now test what you have learned from all the activities that you
did by answering the following questions.
1. What are the different measuring instruments?

2. Which of the measuring instrument is the easiest to handle and store?

3. Which among the measuring instruments serve as three measuring

instruments in one?

4. Why do you think it is important for you to learn the maintenance of the
measuring instrument?

5. If you were to begin your electronic workshop, what measuring

instrument would you most likely use? What is your basis for selecting
this, measuring instrument?

16
What I Can Do

Are you now familiar with the maintenance of measuring instruments?

Alright! Let’s do this level up activity.
ACTIVITY 7.4: INSTRU-PIC
DIRECTIONS: Take a picture of (3) three measuring instruments. Correctly
identify the proper handling, cleaning, and storing of each
instrument. Post this on your class group chat or send it to
your teacher’s messenger account. In case you don’t have
internet access, you may paste/write your answers on your
activity notebook.

You will be assessed with the following point of Rubrics: (20 points)

Assessment

How do you find the lesson? Isn’t it exciting? But wait, there’s more! Let
us do another activity to assess how much you’ve learned from the lesson.
TRUE OR FALSE
Direction: Read and analyze each statement below carefully. Write T if the
statement is TRUE otherwise F if you think the statement is FALSE.

1. Measuring instruments in electronics are confined only to analog

TESTERS and sometimes DIGITAL MILLIMETER.

2. SIGNAL GENERATOR is a device that produces simple waveforms.

3. 50VAC is where the function switch rested if an off position is not

available in the VOM.

4. OSCILLOSCOPE instrument serves as three measuring instruments

in one.

5. VOM should be given a regular check-up by connecting it to the power

line.

6. OSCILLOSCOPE AND SIGNAL GENERATOR are used to simulate a

circuit under test.

7. SIGNAL GENERATOR allows signal voltages to be viewed.

8. MILLIAMMETER measures the small amount of dc current.

9. VOLTMETER measures both ac and dc voltages.

10. OHMMETER usually as a two-dimensional graph of one or more

electrical potential differences (vertical axis) plotted as a function of
time or some other voltage (horizontal axis).
