Manual English

The document describes how to create a bench dog grid using a 3D printed hole grid template. The template has holes spaced at 96mm and can be used to drill holes that are either 19mm or 20mm in diameter. The template is attached to wood and used to guide a router to drill the holes in a grid pattern across the wood surface.

Creation of a bench dog grid with the help of the hole grid
template

With the help of the hole grid template, bench dog grids can be produced with an edge
distance of 76 mm and a hole spacing of 96 mm. The template is universally designed so
that hole diameters of 19 mm and 20 mm can be produced with the same template.

Number Description

1 screw or spring clamps

2 3D printed attachment bolts 19 mm or 20 mm

3 3D printed calibration ring

4 Copy ring diameter d = 27 mm for router

X-Y calibration to fit copy ring

To check whether the copy ring ts into the drilling template, the calibration ring is rst
printed before printing the hole grid template. This must be easy to sit on the copy ring, but
must not have any clearance in the radial direction.

Figure 3: Pass sample of the calibration ring on the copy ring

If the calibration ring is too tight or too loose on the copy ring, the parameter for the X-Y
hole compensation must be set via the
slicer software (here in the example
Bambu Studio). A positive value
increases the hole diameter, a negative
makes the holes smaller. Here it may be
necessary to try something until the
optimal t has been found. The value is
then transferred to the printing settings
of the hole grid template and the
template is printed.

Milling hole grid with the hole grid template

The total of 9 large holes on the hole grid template are the centerings for the router with
copy ring, through which the hole grid is produced. With 4 of the 8 small holes each, the
hole grid template is positioned on the edge of the wooden plate to be processed.

Figure 4: Functions of the hole grid template

If a hole grid system with d = 19 mm is to be made, then the template is aligned via the
corner (2) on the wooden plate, in which 4 stop bolts 19 mm are inserted horizontally and
vertically into the 4 small receiving holes (3) along the marking lines. Analogously, for the d
= 20 mm system, the corner (1) is proceeded accordingly in conjunction with 4 stop bolts
20 mm.

In the following picture, the template was positioned at the lower left corner of the wooden
plate to be processed for the 20 mm hole system and xed with spring clamps:

Now two holes are milled into the plate with the router. Due to space, only the middle and
upper right hole is made:

In the next step, two of the stop bolts are inserted into the holes to x the template, the
spring clamps are moved and the remaining two holes are milled in:

This means that the rst four holes are incorporated into the plate and the milling template

can now be moved horizontally to the next machining position and xed. Here, the two right
holes are used as a xing point with the stop bolts:

Attention should always be paid to a good t of the template and a clean arrangement of
the edge spacing bolts. The next four holes can now be milled.

Step by step, you are now working forward in a horizontal direction over the entire plate
length.

Now the hole grid template is positioned again on the left edge and placed vertically at the
top. With the two upper left holes and the stop bolts, the template is precisely aligned.

The most di cult thing is now done, from now on you can position the template for the
remaining holes with the existing holes and the four stop bolts and nish milling the plate.

As a result, you get a high-precision hole grid:

The inspection with a 90° and 45° angle con rms the high precision of the milled hole grid:

Enjoy the hole grid template, more tools for this system will follow. To do this, please look
