I. PROBLEM SOLVING. Solve the following:
1. Design a plain concrete footing for a 300 mm reinforced concrete wall that supports a dead
load of 176 KN/m including the weight of the wall and an 88 KN/m liveload. The base of the
footing is to be 1.50 m below the final grade. fc’ = 20.7 KPa and allowable soil pressure is 190
KPa., weight of soil = 15.7 KN/m3.
2. Design a spread footing for a column 480 mm x 480 mm in section to carry a deadline of 900
KN and a liveload of 1000 KN. Allowable soil pressure at service load is 170 KPa. Neglect the
weight of soil above the footing. Use fc’ = 20 MPa, fy = 400 MPa.
3. A footing 2000 mm. wide x 2 000 mm. long and 0.45 m. thick carries a square column 0.40 m.
x 0.40 m. on its center. The e ffective depth of footing = 0.35 m; Concrete, fc’ = 28 MPa;
Reinforcing steel, fy = 415 MPa; Allowable stresses at ultimate loads:
For two- way action shear = 1.76 MPa
For wide- beam shear = 0.88 MPa.
Determine the following:
1. The allowable axial load (KN) at ultimate condition based on two-way action shear?
2. The allowable axial load (KN) at ultimate stresses if based on wide- beam shear.
3. The design moment at ultimate loads at the face of the column is 300 KN.m. How many
20 mm ø bars are required?
4. Determine the number of piles required in a cluster to support the pile group. Given the
following data, Friction piles, 400mm x 400mm in cross-section, are embedded 20m into a
layer of plastic clay to support a pile cap factored load of 12,000 kN. The unconfined
compression strength of the clay was obtained at 120kPa. Hint: pile group has an 80%
efficiency.
5. Determine maximum and minimum footing pressure for footing with eccentricity < B/6, given
the following:
Column loads:
Live load: 25 kips
Dead load: 25 kips
Live load moment = 20 ft-kips
Dead load moment = 20 kips
Footing information:
Footing sizes = 6 ft x 6 ft
6. Given the following column information:
Column A: Live load = 40 kips, Dead load = 50 kips
Column B: Live load = 80 kips, Dead load = 100 kips.
Distance between two columns: 15 ft.
Footing information:
Allowable soil bearing capacity; 3000 psf
Distance from column A to edge of footing: 1 ft.
Allowable soil bearing capacity = 3000 psf

Weight of soil above footing = 120 psf
Depth of footing= 24”
Depth of soil above footing = 12”
Determine the following:
1. The size of a combined footing.
2. Maximum Shear and Moment of a combined footing
3. Check if the footing depth is adequate for punching shear and direct shear.
7. Design of a wall footing, given the following data:
Wall loads:
Live load: 2.5 kips/ft
Dead load:3 kips/ft
Wall type: 8” concrete masonry wall
Soil information:
Allowable soil bearing capacity: 2500 psf
Required frost depth: 18”
Unit weight of soil: 100 pcf
Materials used:
Concrete strength at 28 day = 3000 psi
Yield strength of rebars = 60 ksi
Design code: ACI 318-05
8. A square foundation measuring 0.76 m x 0.76 m is constructed on a layer of sand. We are
given that and c’ = 0. A rock layer is located at a depth of
0.46 m below of the foundation. Using a factor of safety of 4, determine the gross allowable
load of the foundation can carry.
9. Assume we are building a foundation on a saturated clay deposit with an average undrained
shear strength of 2000 lb/ft2 and a COV of 0.2. the average unit weight of the soil is 102 lb/ft2
with a COV of 0.05. Determine the following:
1. What is the mean short-term nominal bearing capacity of a continuous footing founded
at a depth of 5 ft?
2. What is the probability that the nominal bearing capacity of a certain footing would be
less than 75% of the mean nominal bearing capacity in the undrained shear strength
and unit weight are normally distributed and independent?
3. Compute the probability of failure of the footing in Problem no.1, assuming it is subjected
to an applied bearing stress, q, with a mean of 3500 lb/ft2 and standard deviation of 800
lb/ft2.

10. A certain pile has a mean capacity of 800 kN as computed with design method A. A
statistical analysis of a number of piles designed with this method indicates that the
COV for this method is 0.45. the download demand placed on this pile has a mean
value of 250 kN. Based on the loads in similar applications, the COV of the demand is
estimated to be 0.27. Compute the factor of safety, based on mean values, and the
probability of failure of this pile assuming capacity and demand are independent and
normally distributed.
GOOD LUCK!!!
