A turbo jet plane has two jets of 250 mm diameter and net power at the
turbine is 3000 kW. The fuel consumption per kWhr is 0.42 kg with a fuel of
calorific value 49 MJ/kg. when flying at a speed of 300 m/s in atmosphere
having a density of 0.168 kg/m 3, the fuel air ratio is 53. Calculate the
following:
(i) The absolute velocity of the jet
(ii) The resistance or drag of the plane
(iii) Overall efficiency of the plane and
(iv) The efficiency of the turbine
2. A turbo jet engine takes in 50 kg/sec of air and propels an aircraft with
uniform flight speed 245 m/s. Isentropic enthalpy change for nozzle is 188
kJ/kg and its velocity co-efficient is 0.96. The fuel air ratio is 1.2 %.
Combustion efficiency is 95%, Calorific value of fuel is 44 MJ/kg. Determine
(i) Thermal efficiency of the engine
(ii) Fuel flow in kg/hr
(iii) Propulsive efficiency
(iv) Overall efficiency
3. For a turbo jet with a flight velocity of 800 kmph at an ambient of 60 kPa,
the properties of gas entering the nozzle are 300 kPa and 473 K. The mass
flow rate of air is 20 kg/s. Assuming air (γ = 1.4 and R= 287 J/kg K) as
working fluid, find the thrust developed, the thrust power and propulsive
efficiency.
4. The diameter of the propeller of an aircraft is 2.5 m. It files at a speed of 500
kmph at an altitude of 8000 m for flight to jet speed ratio= 0.75. Determine
(i) The flow through the propeller
(ii) Thrust Produced
(iii) Specific thrust
(iv) Specific impulse
(v) Thrust Power
Take density at 8000 m as 0.525 kg/m3
5. A turbo jet has a speed of 750 kmph while flying at an altitude of 10000 m.
the propulsive efficiency of the jet is 50% and the overall efficiency of the
turbine plant is 16%. The density of the air @10000m is 0.173 kg/m 3. The
drag on the plane is 6250 N. CV of fuel is 48000 kJ/kg. Calculate the absolute
velocity of the jet, diameter of the jet and power output of the unit in kW
6. A turbojet engine is travelling at a speed of 236.11 m/s under conditions
288 K and 1.013 bar. The ram efficiency is 85%. Calculate the total pressure
and temperature of the air after inlet diffuser. Take C pa = 1.005 kJ/kg K, γ
=1.4
7. The following data refer to a turbo-jet flying at an altitude of 9500 m .
Speed of the turbo-jet = 850 km/hr , Propulsive efficiency = 55%, overall
efficiency of the turbine plant =17 %, density of air = 0.17 kg/m 3, Drag on
plane = 6.1 kN. Calculate the absolute velocity of jet, diameter of jet and
propulsive power.
8. An aircraft flies at 900 km/h. One of its turbojet engines takes in 45 kg/s of
air and expands the gases to the ambient pressure. The air-fuel ratio is 38
and the lower calorific value of the fuel is 41 MJ/kg. True or false?

0.012. the combustion efficiency is 0.95 . the CV of fuel is 44 MJ/kg.
