Quantity Extraction of Bitumen From 88888

This document describes a test to calculate the actual amount of bitumen in an asphalt mixture. The test involves separating bitumen from a sample using centrifugation and a solvent. The bitumen percentage is then calculated based on the weights of the sample, filter, and remaining materials. The results are compared to the design bitumen percentage to ensure specification.

Quantity Extraction of Bitumen from

Bituminous Mixtures Test

:AIM
The aim of the experiment is to calculate the actual amount of bitumen used in the
asphalt mixture and to ensure that the percentage used is the percentage specified in
the design, i.e. O.A.C% (OPTMUM ASPHAIT CONTENT)

:INTRODUCTION
In this experiment, the percentage of losses in the bitumen material is determined after
heating it, such as oils and any other impurities except water
Where we benefit from this experience when mixing the bituminous material in a
mixer, it is necessary to know the percentage of the loss of the bituminous material
.when it is heated to avoid it
This experiment is of great importance because the bitumen lost a large amount of its
components when heated, so a larger amount should be used when preparing the
asphalt mixture. This experiment also gives a good indication of whether the bitumen
material is contaminated with other materials or not

:APPARATUS
A device for separating bitumen from the asphalt mixture, and it works by -1
centrifugation
Filter (filter) to absorb bitumen -2
Electric oven -3
Sensitive scale -4
A graduated flask for measuring the amount of a solvent solution -5

:PROCEDURE
One of the samples that was designed in the previous test was taken -1
Cover the sample with a solvent solution in the container designated for this -2
purpose
The sample is placed in the device, the filter (absorption weight) is placed, and the -3
device is closed well
The device is rotated (it works by centrifugation) and the speed of the device -4
increases gradually until it reaches 3600 revolutions per minute. The device is stopped
and a quantity of 200 mm of the solvent solution is drained, and the above is repeated
with a minimum of 3 times, or until the black color of the crushed stone materials
.disappears
The filter is dried and the soft materials sticking to it are taken from it, at a -5
.temperature of about 110 °C

:Results
total sample weight Filter weight after use Weigh the
Weight of the (g) (g) filter before
remaining use (g)
material (g)

)residual material weight + (filter weight after use - filter weight before use) (
))16 - 22.2( + 1170(
The total weight of the remaining materials=1176.2gr
=The proportion of bitumen in the mixture
1176.2 -1235
100 * -------------------------- = %4.76
1235

:DISCUSS THE RESULTS

The amount of solution placed each time is 200 mm, but the amount of solution
placed was more than 200 mm
And the percentage of bitumen that we obtained in the laboratory is compared with
the percentage of bitumen used in the mixture, and if it is the same value or slightly
different, then the percentage of error is allowed, then the sample is accepted at the
.site
:CONCLUION
% The proportion of bitumen in the asphalt mixture = 4.76
