I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
1. Define a parallelogram and determine its base and height
2. Demonstrate confidence in their ability to solve problems involving
the area of a parallelogram.
3. Calculate the area of a parallelogram using different methods.

II. Subject Matter

2. Greetings
Good Afternoon Class! You may now take your seats. How are you today?
That's wonderful to hear!
3. Checking of Attendance
Are there any absents today? Very good!
4. Drill
Before we start our new topic let’s get ourselves active by having a quick drill on
multiplication and division.

Are you ready?

Ok let’s begin
1. 6 x 3 ÷ 2 = _____
2. 5 x 5 x 2 = _____
3. 7 x 4 ÷ 2 = _____
4. 10 x 6 ÷ 3 = _____
5. 16 ÷ 2 ÷ 2 = _____

5. Review
So, now let us have a short recap on our last topic about the area of rectangle.
We are going to solve and find the area of the following rectangles:
1. 4.

a. 31m2 a. 80m2
b. 30m2 b. 85m2
c. 35m2 c. 90m2

2. 5.

a. 22 in2 a. 64 in
b. 26 in2 b. 65 in
c. 28 in2 c. 66 in

3.

a. 60 mm2
b. 55 mm2
c. 50 mm2

Do you have any question about the area of rectangle?

Very Good Class!
B. Lesson Proper

MAPEH Integration
1. Motivation
I have here a robot that is made of different shapes.

Before we identify the shapes, let us

first watch this video.
And right after this, we are going to
name the different shapes of the robot. Ok?

(Music Video Playing)

Ok now, let us identify the shapes.
Very Good Class!

Social Studies Integration

1. Presentation
So now, you are familiar with these shapes. All of these belongs to a quadrilateral
family.

Let us first define a quadrilateral?

Quadrilateral is derived from the Latin word “quadri” which means “four” and
“latus” which means “sides”.

Examples of quadrilaterals are: squares, rectangles, trapezoids, parallelograms and

rhombus.

But today, we are going to focus on a parallelogram.

This a picture of a parallelogram.

Are you familiar with this?

Ok now, let’s discuss a parallelogram.

A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with four sides and four angles. The opposite sides
of a parallelogram are parallel and congruent to each other and are equal in length.

When we say parallel it means the lines never intersect or do not meet. Congruent
means identical in shape and size.

2. Activity
Let us try this activity!
We are going to find the area of a parallelogram through counting of the squares.

1 is equal to 1 cm
Ok, let’s get started.

1. A painter wants to paint a wall that is shaped like a parallelogram. Find the
area of the wall?

As you can see, there are incomplete squares, so it is difficult to count.

What are we going to do is to shade the incomplete squares.

After that, we are going to transfer the smaller part to the other side. And you can now
count the squares.

 Has the shape changed? What is the new shaped formed?

Ok, let’s have another one.

2. The vegetable garden has the shape of a parallelogram. Find the area of a
vegetable garden

A = _____

Do you think the area of a rectangle the same with the area of a parallelogram?

3. Analysis
From the activity that we did:
 How did you find the activity?
 How do we find the area of the parallelogram?
 Were you able to use any of your previous learning?

4. Abstraction
So now, we are going to discuss the formula in finding the area of a parallelogram.

A=bxh
Where:
A = is the area (the measurement of the space contained within a plane figure)
b = is the base
h = is the height
First, we need to identify the base and the height of the parallelogram

base

Let us have an example:

6m
Let us substitute the given to the formula.

A=bxh
A = 6m x 3m
A = 18 m2

Class don’t forget to put the unit of measurement.

Ok let’s have another example.

5m
 Do you think the base and height of a parallelogram is related to the length and
width of a rectangle?

base length

This is simply because, the base (b) of a parallelogram = length (l) of a rectangle and
the height (h) of a parallelogram = width (w) of a rectangle.

Do you have questions or clarifications?

Are we clear with this?

5. Setting of Standards
Ok class before we proceed to our next activity, what are the things that should we
do:
1. Listen to instructions carefully.
2. Participate to your groupmates.
3. Do the task quietly
Ok, are we clear?

6. Application
In this activity, you are going to measure the base and height of a parallelogram
through counting of squares, label it and solve for the area.

I will divide you into 4 groups.

For this activity, you will be graded through this rubric.
The perfect score will be 20 pts.

Ok you may start working with your groupmates.

Group 1 Group 3

Group 2 Group 4
If you are done, let us start with the presentation.

7. Generalization
Now, let us summarize what we have learned today.

 A parallelogram is a (polygon) with (four) sides and (four) angles. The

opposite sides are (parallel) and (congruent) with each other.
 What are parts of a parallelogram? (base and height)
 What is the formula in finding the area of a parallelogram? (A=bxh)
 In what ways, can we find the area of a parallelogram.
(Through counting of squares and using the formula)

Are we clear? Do you have questions?

Ok, very good!

IV. Evaluation
Find the area of the following parallelogram.

1. 2. 3.

Area = ________ Area = ________ Area = ________

4. 5.

Area = ________ Area = ________

V. Assignment
Answer the following word problems at home.
1. Imagine you are a construction worker building a roof with a parallelogram-
shaped base. The base is 12 feet long, and the height is 7 feet. How much
roofing material do you need to cover the surface of the roof?
2. You are a farmer plowing a field that is in the shape of a parallelogram. The base
of the parallelogram is 75 meters and the height is 40 meters. Find the area of
the field.
3. You are a designer creating a quilt with a parallelogram-shaped patch. The base
of the parallelogram is 10 inches and the height is 8 inches. How much fabric do
you need to create the patch?
4. An artist is painting a mural on a wall that is shaped like a parallelogram. The
base of the wall is 6 meters and the height is 3 meters. Find the area of the wall.
5. A painter wants to paint a wall that is shaped like a parallelogram. The base of
the wall is 11 feet and its height is 8 feet. Find the area of the wall?
