CONTENT CONCEPTS
• Definitions:
A calendar is a chart that shows the months and days of a year in the correct order, or a
table that shows the days, weeks, and months of a specific year.
NOTES
Dates are important because:
 A calendar is used to schedule the events.
 The calendar is used to mark the passage of time.
 They record particular events of a particular time period in history.
 Makes it easy to follow history because history provides us with information about our
past.

MOTIVATIONAL INTRODUCTION
The teacher will start off by looking at a calendar with everyone, firstly asking students to point
at holidays such as Christmas and to point out their birthdays. Students will be asked what month
their birthdays are in and point to the month word (e.g. January) at the top of each month. The
teacher will start to teach/elicit the English words for months as we discuss their birthdays. The
teacher will ask what month it is now as well as the following (using the calendar):
 the month Christmas is in
 months other holidays are in (e.g. Easter, Father’ s Day, Independence, Hero’s Day)

DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES
Step 1:
Peer Learning ( 5 mins)
Each group will be asked to come up with the different holidays they celebrate. The
teacher will express that not everyone celebrates the same holidays because of different
cultures and religions.
Differentiation
Enrichment: The teacher will have students think of family members' birthdays or other
life events to add to their calendars.
Support: Creating calendars for a whole year may be overwhelming to some, so the
teacher will have these students focus on one or two specific months that are meaningful
to them.

Step 2:
Discovery Learning (10 mins)
The teacher will have a list of the months on the whiteboard with spaces in between the months.
The teacher will have students tell her the holidays they celebrate and the month the holiday is
in. Write the holiday on the board appropriately.
Guided Practice (15 minutes)
Pass out the Joey's Calendar worksheet. Explain that this worksheet has Joey's monthly events on
it.
Complete the worksheet together as a class, going over each question one at a time.

Independent working time (10 minutes)

Show students the Create a Calendar worksheets. Have students start filling in the holidays on
the board. Students may need help figuring out the days of the month certain holidays fall on
Step 3
Problem-solving (20 mins)
The teacher will display a calendar on the board.

Select any section of the calendar that includes a 3-by-3 square grid (3 rows of three numbered
squares) as highlighted in the above image.
Circle the three numbers that appear in the center row of the calendar section you have selected
(11, 12 and 13 in the sample above).
Then circle the three numbers that appear on the right diagonal that begins at “4” (4, 12, and 20)
and the left diagonal that begins at “6” (6, 12, and 18).
Challenge students to add the numbers that comprise the three circled calendar rows.
Wow -- the center row and two diagonals each add up to the same number!
11 + 12 + 13 = 36
4 + 12 + 20 = 36
6 + 12 + 18 = 36
Assessment (10 minutes)
Students will be assessed by the completion of the Joey's Calendar worksheet. Students will
include dates, since the days are already included, along with their birthdays and other holidays.

Step 4
Review and closing (15 minutes)
The teacher will use a large calendar for this activity. Before class, the calendar will be placed to
the front page. The teacher will sit everyone down facing her and turn the page of the calendar to
January.
She will ask "Which month is this?" and have everyone shout out "January!". Then ask, "Is it
January now"? "Yes" or "No" will be elicited depending on the month we are in (November).
The teacher will keep turning the pages and eliciting months until she reaches the current month.
Then ask "What day is it today?" pointing to the days at the top of the page. Get everyone to
shout out the day. Next, the teacher will point down the column of dates and ask "What is the
date today?" and elicit the correct date. Finally, invite a student to come up to the calendar and
stick a star or sticker onto the correct date. Additionally, you can sing the "Days of the Week"
song and "Months March" song.
EVALUATION
To be evaluated at the end of the lesson.
