Tutorial - I

Errors in Numerical Calculations

1. Provide the number of significant digits for each representation.

a. 2340000
b. 0.02965
c. 1.0185
d. 1.85*103
e. 1.850*102
f. 1.8500*10-2
g. 100.00
h. 100.001

2. Round off the following numbers into four significant digits

a. 38.46235
b. 0.70029
c. 0.0022218
d. 19.235101
e. 2.36425

3. Two numbers are given as 2.5 and 48.289, both of which being correct to the significant figures
given. Find their product.

4. If 𝑧 = 𝑥𝑦 , find the percentage error in 𝑧 when 𝑥 = 3.14 ± 0.0016 and 𝑦 = 4.5 ± 0.05.

5. Find the value of S = ; Where a=6.54 ± 0.01, b = 48.64 ± 0.02; and c = 13.5 ± 0.03;
Also, find the relative error in the result.

6. If a number is correct up to n significant figures and the first significant digit is K, then the

relative error is less than

7. Evaluate the sum S = √3+√5+ √7 to four significant digits and find its absolute and relative
errors.
8. Calculate the value of √52 − √51 correct to three significant digits.

9. Three approximate values of the number 1/3 are given as 0.30, 0.33, and 0,34. Which of these
values is the best approximation.
10. An approximate value of π is given by x1= 22/7=3.1428571 and its true value is X= 3.1415926.
Find its absolute and relative error.
11. Find the absolute error and the exact number corresponding to the approximate number XA =
7.543. Assume that the percentage error is 0.1%.

12. Find the relative error if the number X = 0.6957 if

i) Truncated to two decimal digits
ii) Rounded off to two decimal digits

13. Find the first 4 terms in the Taylor’s series for (x-1)eX near x=1.

14. Find the first 3 terms in the Taylor’s series for the function sinπx centered at a=0.5. Use your
answer to find an approximate value of sin ( + )
( )
15. Determine the number of terms required in the series for 𝑙𝑜𝑔 ( )
=2 𝑥+ + +. . . . and
use it to compute the value of 𝑙𝑜𝑔 (1.2) correct to seven decimal places. If instead the series
for loge(1+x) is used, how many terms must be taken to obtain the same accuracy for 𝑙𝑜𝑔 (1.2)
