INTRODUCTION
The Portrait of a Lady summary is a real story of the writer’s grandmother. The
name of the writer is Kushwant Singh. His grandmother was an old lady. The writer
tells us the story of the childhood that he had spent with his grandmother. The
writer has explained his relationship with his grandmother over the years. He thinks
about her daily activities and how she grew as a character over time. He mentions her
appearance, which assists in creating a mental impression of her in the reader’s mind.
THE AUTHOR
KHUSHWANT SINGH

Khushwant Singh was an Indian author, lawyer, diplomat, journalist and politician.
Khushwant Singh, one of the best -known Indian writers of all times, was born in
1915 in Hadali (now in Pakistan). He was educated at the Government College,
Lahore and at King's College, Cambridge University, and the Inner Temple in
London.
Khushwant Singh’s work has socio-religion-political context, but he is not always in
the mood of iconoclastic anger. There is no didacticism or moralization in his novels.
He neither uses his art for allowed propaganda, nor professes indulgence in art for
art’s sake. Khushwant Singh’s angle of vision is also shaped by his devotion to human
interest.

5 most famous works of this legendary writer are Train to Pakistan, I Shall Never
Hear a Nightingale, The Portrait of a Lady, Why I Supported The Emergency,
Delhi.
OLD AGE HOMES
IN INDIA

Old age homes are residents with nursing and assisted living facilities for
accommodating the elderly. Here the elderly are given continuing care and attention
based on their needs and concerns. As far as our country is concerned, old age homes
are still a very nascent concept. Many are tilting towards a nuclear family concept
and are eventually exploring the possibilities of escaping the responsibility of having
to deal with their parents hands-on.
According to the Report of the Technical Group on Population Projections for India
and States 2011-2036, there are 728 old age homes in India. Old Age Homes in India
may be both public and private homes. They provide different geriatric services in
India including in-home care, hourly adult care, hospice care, palliative care, assisted
living and nursing homes. These services are also based on the respective disease
indications.
Old Age Homes in India are still viewed with serious misgivings. However, due to
the nation’s rapidly aging elderly population and its subsequent increase in demand
for long term care through Old Age Homes in India, the government has formulated
various policies and schemes.
Alongside the government, there are numerous goodwill organizations working
towards helping the elderly population in need. One such organization is the Wishes
and Blessings NGO, based in New Delhi. Under its Umbrella project, Care for the
Elderly, the NGO has set up a series of Old Age Homes in India specifically based in
Delhi.
Mann Ka Tilak is the first charitable old age home set up on 25th April 2018.
The elders are given uncompromised attention and service where facilities including
housing, boarding, food, entertainment, recreation and medical facilities are
provided free of cost. They are given a new lease on life and are given the dignity and
respect that everyone is entitled to.
INSPIRING STORIES
OF SUCCESSFUL SENIORS

The Rockin’ Runner

Most people won’t ever run a marathon, but in June 2014, Charlotte, N.C. resident
Harriette Thompson completed her 15th and broke a few records in the process.

At 91 years old, Thompson is the oldest woman ever to compete in the Suja Rock ‘n’
Roll San Diego Marathon and the second-oldest marathon runner in U.S. history.
She finished the race in 7 hours, 7 minutes, and 42 seconds to break the U.S. record
for the fastest time in her age group. Thompson, a cancer survivor, has been running
since 1999 and ran her first marathon at age 76.
The Seasoned Skydiver

Jumping out of a plane is scary at any age, but in 2011, Fred Mack celebrated his
100th birthday by skydiving for the second time. Mack’s first skydiving experience
came at age 95, and he followed it up five years later at Free Fall Adventures in
Williamstown, New Jersey when he completed a 13,000-foot tandem jump.

Perhaps the centenarian’s fearlessness came from prior experience: he flew planes in
the 1930s and also worked as an engineer, helping to design fighter planes during
World War II. Skydiving isn’t his only active hobby—Mack was a competitive skier
into his 70s and skied all the way into his 90s.
The Grandma Gymnast

At 88 years old, Germany native Johanna Quaas is the oldest active gymnast in the
world. Quaas, born in 1925, started doing gymnastics at an early age and participated
in her first competition in 1934. Eighty years later, she’s still competing, and her
participation in the Turnier der Meister in Cottbus in 2012 notched her an entry in
The Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest gymnast in the world.

The grandmother and mother of three has been married to Gerhard Quaas, a
gymnastics coach, for more than 50 years.
INITIATIVES TO BE TAKEN
Ensuring that elderly people live a dignified life is a crucial responsibility for any
society. The elderly deserve respect, care, and support to maintain their well-being
and quality of life. Here are some initiatives that can be taken to achieve this goal:

Social Support Programs:

Establish community centers and clubs where seniors can socialize, participate in
activities, and access support services.
Create programs to match older individuals with volunteers or companions to
reduce isolation and loneliness.

Healthcare and Wellness:

Provide affordable and accessible healthcare services tailored to the needs of the
elderly.
Offer regular health check-ups, screenings, and vaccinations.
Promote active lifestyles and physical fitness through fitness classes and activities
designed for seniors.
US - Social Security
Social Security is a vital program in the United States that plays a significant role in
ensuring the financial security and dignity of elderly people. To further enhance the
lives of elderly individuals and make sure they live with dignity, various initiatives
and reforms can be considered:

Increase Benefits:
Adjust the calculation of Social Security benefits to provide higher income
replacement rates for low-income and middle-income earners.

Cost-of-Living Adjustments (COLA):

Ensure that COLAs are calculated to better reflect the rising costs that seniors face,
including healthcare expenses.
Grants from the Government

Government grants and funding initiatives play a crucial role in supporting

programs and services that can enhance the lives of elderly people and help them live
a dignified life. Here are some key initiatives and areas where government grants can
make a significant impact:

Aging-in-Place Programs:

Provide grants to support home modifications and accessibility improvements to

enable elderly individuals to continue living in their own homes comfortably and
safely.
Healthcare Services:

Fund grants for community health clinics, hospitals, and healthcare providers to
offer specialized healthcare services for the elderly, including geriatric care and
mental health services.
Nutrition Programs:

Support grants for senior nutrition programs, such as Meals on Wheels, to ensure
that older adults have access to nutritious meals.
