CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
In spring 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused severe disruption to everyday life
around the world. As one of several measures taken to prevent the spread of the
virus, many governments closed schools for several weeks or months. Although
school closures are considered to be one of the most efficient interventions to curb
the spread of the virus (Haug et al., 2020), many educators and researchers raised
concerns about the effects of COVID-19-related school closures on student
academic achievement and learning inequalities. The negative effects of school
closures due to summer vacation or natural disasters, and of absenteeism on
student achievement are already well documented in the literature (for an overview
see Kuhfeld et al., 2020a). Less is known, however, about the impact of COVID-19-
related school closures on student achievement. The primary focus of the literature
on COVID-19-related school closures to date was on the reception and use of digital
learning technologies and remote learning (Andrew et al., 2020; Grewenig et al.,
2020; Maity et al., 2020; Pensiero et al., 2020; Blume et al., 2021).
This study compared the effectiveness of online vs. traditional instruction in an
environmental studies class. Using a single indicator, we attempted to see if student
performance was effected by instructional medium. This study sought to compare
online and F2F teaching on three levels—pure modality, gender, and class rank.
Through these comparisons, we investigated whether one teaching modality was
significantly more effective than the other. Although there were limitations to the
study, this examination was conducted to provide us with additional measures to
determine if students performed better in one environment over another (Mozes-
Carmel and Gold, 2009.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine and know the Virtual attendance of Senior High
schools in Bipsu . To obtain all the essential knowledge, data, and information the
research sought to answer the crucial question as follow:
1. What is the demographic profile of the Senior high School student as to
a. Gender
b. Residence
c. Financial status
2. What problem do they encounter during virtual?
3. What is the assessed impact of virtual attendance as a student?
4. What can be the action plan to cope with their absents?

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study is to focus on Senior high school students’ Virtual Attendance amidst
pandemic. Its main purpose is to identify the most common issues they face and to
propose solutions to these issues. This study evaluates every part of students’
personal information that has an impact on their academic performances such as
their parent’s educational history, their parents income, their gender, age and home
location. Each of the respondents are given same questionnaires to answer. This
research focuses on current second-year students from the 2008-2009 school year.

Review of Related Literature

Although not many studies have been done exploring the effects of COVID-19 on the
academic performance of students and assessing their level of satisfaction with
online teaching during the outbreak of COVID-19, but the researcher made an effort
to find out the most related studies concerning the present study. Regrettably, the
epidemic of COVID-19 affected substantially virtually all the educational levels in
diverse contexts across the globe and have been implemented into the educational
settings to have feasible provision for instructors and pupils (Oyinloye, 2020).
(Oyinloye, 2020). The effects of COVID-19 confinement on the performance of
students at the higher education level were investigated by Gonzalez, Rubia, et al.
(2020). A total of 458 learners were used for field experimental research, with two
groups: control and experimental. Surprisingly, their research found that COVID-19
confinement left a beneficial impact on the performance of the kids and helped them
to strengthen the learning methodologies of the pupils. Similarly, another study was
carried out by Realyvásquez-Vargas et al. (2020) evaluated if the ambient elements
affect students’ academic performance during COVID-19. To accomplish this
research, they found that students’ academic performance has been affected by
environmental elements during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Furthermore, Elhadary et al. (2020) assessed the impacts of COVID-19 on the

academic performance of scientific and social science students in Turkey. Their
findings demonstrated that numerous factors affected the academic achievement of
the children during the COVID-19 crisis. Despite this, their research found that both
teachers and students are happy with how online learning and teaching is used. With
their happiness and performance, Loton et al. (2020) investigated online learning
during the COVID-19 pandemic. The conclusion of their research demonstrated that
there is a considerable impact on both performances of the students and their level
of satisfaction with online teaching and learning during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Likewise, another study conducted in Indonesian context where the researcher
studied the solution, advantages and restrictions using online learning during the
COVID-19 epidemic. They discussed their participants' satisfaction with the pupils'
performance during the COVID-19 epidemic (Fatoni et al., 2020).

Framework of the Study

This section provides the theoretical and conceptual framework of the study.

Theoretical Framework
Walberg’s theory tackles about the influences on learning that affects the academic
performance of a student. It is an exploration of academic achievement wherein
Walberg used a variety of methods on how to identify the factors that affects the
academic performance of a student. He analyzed his theory with the help of different
theorists and integrated his study with over 3000 studies. In his theory, he classified
11 influential domains of variables, 8 of them were affected by social-emotional
influences namely, classroom management, parental support, student-teacher
interactions, social-behavioral attributes, motivational-effective attributes, the peer,
exposure to media.
The variables are reflected with different representation. In the first three variables
(ability, motivation, and age) reflect characteristics of the student. The fourth and fifth
variables reflect instruction (quantity and quality), and the final four variables
(classroom climate, home environment, peer group, and exposure to media) represent
aspects of the psychological environment. He explained that these variables has a
certain effects that might cause problems with the academic performance of students
if it will not be properly guided. Giving importance with a certain variable can mean a
big impact with the student’s academic performance.

Conceptual Framework
The main parameters of this study is to determine the students virtual attendance on
Senior High School Students of Biliran Province State University as presented in the
diagram below.

Definition and Terms

Face-to-face (F2F)- The traditional classroom or face-to-face instruction is when the
instructor and the students of a nonprofit educational institution are in a place
devoted to instruction and the teaching and learning take place at the same time. In
this setting, all performances and displays of a work are allowed.

Online Learning- Online learning is a method of education whereby students learn in

a fully virtual environment. ... Online learning refers to an internet-based learning
environment that can connect students of diverse backgrounds who boast different
perspectives.

Virtual Attendance- a person is not physically present at a Relevant Meeting, but

instead is able to participate in the Relevant Meeting by means of a video and/or
audio platform, in like manner to those who are physically present.
Research Hypothesis
1: Students’ demographic variables such as age, sex, marital status, have an effect
on academic performance.
2: Parents’ educational background has an effect on academic performance.
3: Student socio-economic status and preferred sitting position have an effect on
academic performance.
4: Father/Guardian income has an effect on academic performance.
5: Student engagement in social activities has an effect on academic performance.

METHODOLOGY
This section discusses the overall procedures as a means to attain the objectives
posed in this study. It includes the research design, locale of the study, research
subject, research instrument, data gathering procedure.

Research Design

This study will utilize the descriptive survey method with the questionnaire as the
main gathering tool. This method was directed towards ascertaining the effects of the
Pandemic to the Senior High School students of Biliran Province State University,
specifically on their Virtual performance.

Research Locale

questionnaires which will be distributed online to the selected respondents.

The survey questionnaires consist of questions that aim to identify the effects the
Pandemic on Senior High School students in terms of their academic performance.

Data Collection Procedure

 The researchers will seek the approval of the selected Senior High School
Students to participate in answering the survey.

 The selected respondents will be given enough time to answer the survey
questionnaires.

 The questionnaire will be scored, tallied and tabulated.
