Linear Equations
There are 3 characteristics of LDE:
1. Dependent variable and all its derivatives are of the first degree.
2. No product of the dependent variable and/or any of its derivatives are present.
3. No non-linear functions of the dependent variable or its derivatives occur.

Example 1: The following are first order LDE:

(a) − 3y = 0 (b) + 2xy = 4sinx (c) xy’ – 5y = x5ex

Method of solving LDE:
Step 1: Put the equation in a standard form: + 𝑃(𝑥)𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥)
Step 2: Identify P(x) and f(x).

Step 3: Find the integrating factor (IF) by using formula: 𝜇 𝑥 = 𝑒 ∫
Integrating factor is a solution to a certain partial differential equation.

⑳ 𝜇(𝑥)
Step 4: Multiply both sides with the integrating factor (IF): + 𝑃(𝑥)𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥) .
Step 5: Conclude the left-hand side to be the derivative of the integrating factor (IF) and the
dependent variable y.

𝜇 𝑥 𝑦 = 𝜇 𝑥 𝑓(𝑥)
𝑑𝑥

Step 6: Integrate both sides: ∫ 𝜇 𝑥 𝑦 𝑑𝑥 = ∫ 𝜇 𝑥 𝑓(𝑥) 𝑑𝑥

Step 7: Solve for y: 𝑦(𝑥) =
