The document discusses hydraulic ram pumps, which use water pressure to pump water to higher elevations. It describes the key components of ram pumps including intake and drive pipes, delivery tanks, and pump houses. It also discusses factors that affect pump performance such as water source characteristics and pipe lengths. Common issues include insufficient water, freezing, and air in the system.

1.

Hydraulic ram pump also known as Hydram is a hydroelectric-powered water pump that use the
force of falling water. The water hammer effect caused by increased water pressure is used by
this pump. It is able to lift water to an elevation higher than the pump by using the pressure
generated by a water source above the pump.
2. Drive tank - typically constructed between the intake and the ram pump to ensure a constant
flow of water to the ram pump
Drive pipe - connects the pump house to the drive tank.
Delivery pipe - Pipe that connects the delivery tank to the pump house.
Delivery tank - This is the temporary storage area for some of the water.
Pump house - It is designed to prevent theft or unintentional damage to the ram pump and
fittings.
3. Hydraulic ram pumps are environmentally friendly, with low maintenance and fabrication costs.
The hydram also benefits greatly from the adjustable waste valves because it can boost the
water flow rate at the discharge pipe. Ram pumps cannot be used as frequently in arid climates
because they need a constant flow of fluid to function. The majority of ram pump systems
require rivers that are always flowing because they are a dependable source of water.
4. Flow rates of 14 gallons per minute or 20,000 gallons per day are feasible with hydraulic ram
pumps that have been properly sized and installed. Depending on the amount and speed of
water flowing at the source, water can be raised to heights of up to 400 feet.
5. Lack of air in the pressure vessel, an incorrectly adjusted waste valve, or simply trying to raise
the water higher than the ram can handle are all potential causes of insufficient water delivery.
The ram could become damaged due to freezing in the winter or air loss in the pressure vessel
that causes too much stress on the ram's components. These failures require welding or other
types of repairs, as well as possibly new parts.
6. In selecting the appropriate pump, it should deliver the flow rate required for your specific
circumstances. The quantity and rate of the water source's flow affect the pump's flow rate and
pressure. The quantity should be determined by measuring the water source flow. The speed of
flow will depend on the change of elevation or fall between the inlet to the drive pipe and
between the inlet to the pump.
7. A hydraulic ram pump is a cyclic water pump powered by hydropower that is typically used to
pump drinking and irrigation water in remote, mountainous areas.
8. A hydram pump is installed in such a way (see figure 5) that the drive pipe's length affects how
frequently it operates. The performance of the output will suffer if a cycle is either too fast or
too slow. An excessively long drive pipe or too much weight on the waste valve can result in an
excessively long cycle because it takes longer for the water column to pass through and the
valve closes suddenly.
9. Air and water contamination that may result in cavitation and aeration is one of the most
common problem in hydram pumps. Temperature problems that causes severe problems over
time. Human errors like faulty installations, improper maintenance and usage are the main
causes of these problems. These problem may be lessen or prevented by properly maintaining
the good state of the pump, always checking the valves and monitor its performance is also a
great help in preventing malfunctions.
10. The parameters to be considered in designing a hydraulic ram to improve its efficiency are:
a. The difference in height between the water source and pump site
b. The difference in the height between the pump site and the paint of storage or use
c. The length of the pipe from the source to pump site
d. The quantity of water required.
e. The length of pipe from the storage site
