Graph the solution to the following inequality on the number line.

x−6 x+1 <0

EXPLANATION

We need to find all values of x that make the product x − 6 x + 1 negative.


To find these values, we do a sign analysis.

We first look at the sign of x−6 .

If x = 6, then x−6 is 0.
If x < 6, then x−6 is negative.
If x > 6, then x−6 is positive.

We show this on the number line.

We then look at the sign of x+1 .

If x = − 1, then x + 1 is 0.
If x < − 1, then x + 1 is negative.
If x > − 1, then x + 1 is positive.
