The purpose of the study was to explore issues and challenges faced by teachers supervising thesis and projects in distance learning. Through interviews with 16 research supervisors, the study found that time constraints, official restrictions, irregular contact, and technology issues were main problems. Student-supervisor interaction, diversity, perceptions, virtual communities, and academic collaboration were also challenges. Students' attitudes and supervisors' mindsets were identified as key success factors for distance research supervision.

ARTICLE REVIEW 4
TITLE: Research supervision in distance learning: issues and challenges
1. Research Issue and Purpose- The purpose of this study is to explore and highlight the issues and challenges teachers face while supervising thesis and projects in distance/online learning mode. 2. Researcher Pre-understandings- DL improves the access to education for all the aspiring students. DL overcomes the issues of capacity, infrastructure and faculty. It provides standardized quality content to all the students without any discrimination. Like conventional system, DL is also not free from certain shortcomings, for example, burden of learning is shifted on the learner (though flexibility is there), there is too much diversity in the same course, more importantly student and teacher are separated by time and space leading to asynchronous mode. 3. Literature Review- There are various literature used locally and internationally from 2003 up to 2020 to support this study. 4. Theoretical or Conceptual framework- There were no Theoretical and Conceptual framework on the paper. 5. Participants- 16 research supervisors were the participants of the study. 6. Protection of Human Research Participants- Ethical consideration was considered as part of protecting the research respondents. 7. Research Design- The research uses a qualitative study and inductive approach has been used. Philosophical assumption is interpretivism, and grounded theory approach is used to collect and analyze the data. 8. Data Collection/Generation Methods- This is a cross-sectional qualitative study. Grounded theory approach using Gioia methodology has been applied. Semi-structured interviews of 16 research supervisors have been conducted to explore the issues and challenges faced by the supervisors in guiding research students. Purposive sampling is used to select the subjects for data collection. 9. Credibility- The generated data was credible in a way that the researchers used adapted tool to measure the data. 10. Findings, Results - Results of the study reveal that the time constraints, official restrictions, irregular contacts and technology are the main issues faced by supervisors. Whereas student–supervisor interaction, diversity, perceptions, virtual communities and academic collaboration are the biggest challenges for the supervisors in distance learning. Lastly, it is found that students’ attitude and supervisors’ mindset are the key success factors in distance research supervision. Findings of this paper will help institutions particularly in Asia, to strategically review their research programs to make these programs more effective. Effectiveness will encompass two things, timely completion and novel research. If these two things are addressed efficiently, comparison of distance learning with conventional learning will be more favorable for distance learning.
Research, as one of the most important subject in educational setup faces
various challenges even before the pandemic happens. It is not east to conduct a research. Now, what more if the mode of learning shifts into distance learning where technology is the only medium we could use to pursue education. It is noteworthy that based from the findings of this paper, research supervisors still did their best to continue the innovativeness through research studies. But we cannot deny the fact that despite their hardship and perseverance, these prompt challenges are still the barriers for a research study to be successful. The recommendations that institutions should facilitate face-to-face interactions more frequently with the students who are involved in research should be taken into considerations. Moreover, institutions should invest more in gaining access to online research databases so that the access to online databases of students is also enhanced. Moreover, students should be facilitated to participate in research workshops, conferences and seminars to sharpen their research skills. There is also a need of specific trainings for the teachers in DL, they are away from their students and at times they fail to exhibit empathy which may result in communication barriers.
