EXPERIMENT NUMBER 01

AIM: Observe Components of Network in your Computer Network Lab and state their specification.

I. Practical Significance:
Student should be able to observe components used in Computer Network Lab and state their specification.
II. Relevant Program Outcomes (POs):
 Basic and Discipline Specific Knowledge: Apply knowledge of basic mathematics, science and engineering
fundamentals and engineering specialization to solve the engineering problems.
 Life-long learning: Ability to analyse individual needs and engage in updating in the context of technological
changes.

III. Competency and Practical Skills:

This practical is expected to develop the following skills in you.
 Ability to familiar with the cables, connectors, network connecting devices, crimping tools etc.
IV. Relevant Course Outcomes:
 Analyze the functioning of data communication and computer network.
V. Relevant Affective domain related outcomes :
 Follow safely measure.
 Follow ethical practices.
VI. Theoretical Background :
Definition of Network
A network is a collection of computers or other hardware devices that are connected together, either
physically or logically, using special hardware & software, to allow them to exchange information &
co-operate.

Definition of Computer Network:

A computer network is interconnection of two or more computers connected to each other so that
they can exchange information such as e-mail, messages or documents, or share resources such as disk
storage or printer .
Essential Components for Computer Networks:
For networking following components are essential:
1. Network Interface Card (NIC)
2. Hub
3. Switches
4. Cables and connectors
5. Crimping Tool
6. LAN tester
7. Router
8. Modem
9. Bridge

VII. Apparatus: Cables, connectors, connectivity devices such as Hubs, switches, routers, clients
(workstations), printers, crimping tools.
VIII. Stepwise Procedure:
1. Read the learning overview carefully.
2. Listen to lecture given by the teacher about importance of the subject, curriculum objectives,
learning structure and skills to be developed, information about equipment’s and method of
continuous assessments and tentative plan of work in laboratory.
3. Visit the laboratory for all types of equipment’s, instruments and components to be used while
performing experiments.
