Sheet (9)

Exercise 1: For each of the following PDEs, state its order and
whether it is linear or non-liner. If it is linear, also state whether it is
homogeneous or non-homogeneous:

(a) 𝒖 𝒖𝒙 + 𝒙𝟐 𝒖𝒚𝒚𝒚 + 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝒙 = 𝟎

𝟐
(b) 𝒖𝒙 + 𝒆𝒙 𝒖𝒚 = 𝟎
(c) 𝒖𝒕𝒕 + (𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝒚)𝒖𝒚𝒚 − 𝒆𝒕 𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝒚 = 𝟎
(d) 𝒙𝟐 𝒖𝒙𝒙𝒚 + 𝒚𝟐 𝒖𝒚𝒚 − 𝒍𝒐𝒈 (𝟏 + 𝒚𝟐 )𝒖 = 𝟎
(e) 𝒖𝒙 + 𝒖𝟑 = 𝟏
(f) 𝒖𝒙𝒙𝒚𝒚 + 𝒆𝒙 𝒖𝒙 = 𝒚
(g) 𝒖𝒖𝒙𝒙 + 𝒖𝒚𝒚 − 𝒖 = 𝟎
(h) 𝒖𝒙𝒙 + 𝒖𝒕 = 𝟑𝒖

Exercise 2: For each of the following PDEs, determine its order and
whether it is linear or not. For linear PDEs, state also whether the
equation is homogeneous or not; For non-linear PDEs, circle all term
(s) that are not linear.

(a) 𝒙𝟐 𝒖𝒙𝒙 + 𝒆𝒙 𝒖 = 𝒙𝒖𝒙𝒚𝒚

(b) 𝒆𝒚 𝒖𝒙𝒙𝒙 + 𝒆𝒙 𝒖 = − 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝒚 + 𝟏𝟎 𝒙 𝒖𝒚
(c) 𝒚𝟐 𝒖𝒙𝒙 + 𝒆𝒙 𝒖𝒖𝒙 = 𝟐𝒙𝒖𝒚 + 𝒖
(d) 𝒖𝒙 𝒖𝒙𝒙𝒚 + 𝒆𝒙 𝒖𝒖𝒚 = 𝟓𝒙𝟐 𝒖𝒙

(e) 𝒖𝒕 = 𝒌𝟐 (𝒖𝒙𝒙 + 𝒖𝒚𝒚 ) + 𝒇(𝒙, 𝒚, 𝒕)

Exercise 3: For each of the following PDEs, classify if the PDEs as

parabolic, elliptic, hyperbolic or mixed.

(a) 𝟐𝒖𝒙𝒙 + 𝟑𝒖𝒙𝒚 + 𝟒𝒖𝒚𝒚 = 𝟎

(b) 𝟑𝒖𝒙𝒙 + 𝟓𝒖𝒙𝒚 − 𝟐𝒖𝒚𝒚 = 𝟎
(c) 𝟒𝒖𝒙𝒙 + 𝟏𝟐𝒖𝒙𝒚 + 𝟗𝒖𝒚𝒚 = 𝟎
(d) 𝒖𝒙𝒙 + 𝒖𝒙𝒚 − 𝟐𝒖𝒚𝒚 = 𝟎
(e) 𝒖𝒕𝒕 + 𝟒𝒖𝒙𝒕 + 𝟒𝒖𝒙𝒙 = 𝟎
(f) 𝒖𝒙𝒙 − 𝐱𝒖𝒚𝒚 + 𝒖𝒙 = 𝟎
(g) 𝟑𝒖𝒙𝒙 + 𝟑𝒖𝒚𝒚 − 𝟐𝒖𝒙𝒚 + 𝟔𝒖𝒛𝒛 + 𝐮(𝒖𝒙 + 𝒖𝒛 ) = 𝒖𝒚
𝝏𝒛 𝝏𝟐 𝒛
(h) 𝒙𝒚 =𝟓
𝝏𝒙 𝝏𝒚𝟐

𝝏𝟐 𝒛 𝝏𝟐 𝒛
(i) 𝟓 𝟐
+𝟔 = 𝒙𝒚
𝝏𝒙 𝝏𝒚𝟐

Exercise 4: Solve the following questions

i. Write down the general form of a linear second order differential
equation of a function in three variables.
ii. Determine a and b so that 𝒖(𝒙, 𝒚) = 𝒆𝒂𝒙+𝒃𝒚 is a solution to the equation
𝒖𝒙𝒙𝒙𝒙 + 𝒖𝒚𝒚𝒚𝒚 + 𝟐 𝒖𝒙𝒙𝒚𝒚 = 𝟎
iii. Consider the following partial differential equation
𝝏𝟐 ∅ 𝝏𝟐 ∅ 𝝏𝟐 ∅
𝟑 +𝑩 + 𝟑 𝟐 + 𝟒∅ = 𝟎
𝝏𝒙𝟐 𝝏𝒙𝝏𝒚 𝝏𝒚

For this equation to be classified as parabolic, what is the value of 𝑩𝟐
iv. Consider the PDE
𝟐𝒖𝒕𝒕 − 𝟒𝒖𝒙𝒕 + 𝒖𝒙𝒙 + 𝒙𝟑 𝒖 + 𝒕𝟐 𝒖𝒙 = 𝟎

(a) State the order of PDE and whether it is linear or nonlinear.

(b) Determine if PDE is hyperbolic, parabolic, or elliptic.

Exercise 5: Find the general solution of the following PDEs

(a) 𝒖𝒙 = 𝟐𝐱 + 𝐲
(b) 𝒖𝒚 = 𝐱 + 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝐲
(c) 𝒖𝒙𝒚 = 𝒆𝒙 + 𝒙 𝒕𝒂𝒏 𝒚
(d) 𝒖𝒚𝒚 = 𝟔𝐱
(e) 𝒖𝒙 = 𝐱 + 𝐲 + 𝐳
(f) 𝒖𝒙 − 𝐮 = 𝟎
(g) 𝒖𝒚𝒚 − 𝟒𝐮 = 𝟎
(h) 𝒖𝒙𝒙 + 𝟒𝐮 = 𝟎
(i) 𝒖𝒙𝒚 + 𝒖𝒙 = 𝟎
(j) 𝒖𝒙𝒚 + 𝒖𝒚 = 𝟎
(k) 𝒖𝒚 + 𝒖𝒙 = 𝟎
(l) 𝒖𝒕𝒕 = 𝐜 𝟐 𝒖𝒙𝒙
