Trading Card Project
Introduction
Trading cards! You’ve probably seen them before because they’ve been around for decades. Trading cards
have their origins in the late 1800s as advertising for businesses, mainly in the tobacco industry. In the
early and mid-1900s, the most popular trading cards were baseball cards. Today, trading cards are
associated with other sports like hockey and basketball, and non-sports such as gaming and comic books.
One of the most valuable trading cards is the Honus Wagner T206 tobacco card. It features Honus Wagner,
a hall-of-fame player and coach for the early Pittsburgh Pirates. Wagner is considered by baseball
historians to be one of the true greats in the sport.
The card was issued between 1909 and 1911 by the American Tobacco Company. A dispute between
Wagner and the American Tobacco Company resulted in a small print run of the trade card. Currently,
there are fewer than 60 authenticated cards in existence.
A Honus Wagner T206 card is one of the most valuable trading cards in the world because of Wagner’s
status with baseball enthusiasts and the card’s rarity. In 2013, a Honus Wagner T206 card sold for just
over $3 million at auction.
