ROUTINE CRANE OPERATIONS

I. What

This procedure gives safety guidelines to low risk hoisting operations with deck cranes .

II. Why

To ensure that cranes are operated in a safe way.

III. When

At all times when using a crane for low risk hoisting operations.

IV. Who

All personnel involved in crane operations.

V. How

General rules for crane operations:

Crane only to be operated by a certified or competent crane driver.


A “competent crane driver” will operate the regular ship’s crane for low risk activities onboard such
as loading stores, spare parts, preparation of deck equipment, etc.. The master should assess the
competence of the crane driver, prior these activities.

A “certified crane driver” will operate the crane:


o during construction work activities;
o when divers are involved in the operation;
o during operations with a higher risk level; as determined in a relevant risk
assessment; and other operations with a higher risk level as result of a typical risk
assessment.

Means of communications: 1 point control (banks man ) by radio or by official hand signals ( see
below).

Appropriate PPE’s to be worn. (helmets, safety shoes). Keep in mind that the port regulations or the
client can request to wear additional PPE’s.

NEVER stand underneath a lifted object.

Swinging of lifted object to be restrained by tag lines.

Always check weight of lift and ascertain that the weight does not exceed the SWL of the crane
rigging.

Use certified hoisting equipment

Avoid being inside the turning circle of the crane when she starts swinging the load.
The crane driver is in command of the operations. If in doubt he should cancel the operations.
Only personnel involved in the lifting operations are allowed within reach of the crane. Other
personnel only allowed in this area after obtaining permission of the banks man.

1 Check surroundings concerning wind and weather


conditions before crane operations.

2 Make a Risk Assessment for non-routine lifting operations


3 Inform bridge before start crane operations.

4 Use obligatory PPE (hard hat) during crane operations.

5 Check weight of load.

6 SWL of lifting gear must be sufficient.

7 Lifting gear must be in good condition.

8 No person is to pass under load.

9 Switch off crane when finished crane operations.

10 Inform bridge.
