PORTFOLIO IN LITERATURE
REGION 1
1. Francisco Baltazar (1788–1862), sometimes known as Balagtas, is regarded as one of
the best poets to have ever lived in the Philippines. His epic poem "Florante at Laura,"
regarded as a pinnacle of Philippine literature, was written.
2. Juan C. Laya, a Filipino author and novelist from Ilocos Norte in Region 1, lived from
1898 until 1959. His work "His Native Soil" (Talambuhay ni Andres Bonifacio), which
examines the life of Andres Bonifacio, the national hero of the Philippines, is well
recognized.
3. Born in Tondo, Manila, Bienvenido N. Santos (1911–1996) was a well-known Filipino–
American author. Despite not being from region 1, he spent his formative years there,
which had an impact on his work. He wrote a number of books, including "The Praying
Man," a novel that describes the difficulties faced by Filipino immigrants in the US.
4. Amado V. Hernandez (1903–1970) was born in Hagonoy, Bulacan, but lived most of his
life in Ilocos Norte, Region 1 in the Philippines. He was a poet, writer, and labor leader
from the Philippines. The poetry "Mga Munting Tinig," one of Hernandez's best pieces,
depicts the misery of the socially downtrodden.
5. Kerima Polotan-Tuvera (1925–2011) was a well-known Filipino author who was born
in Jolo, Sulu, yet her works had a big influence on Philippine literature. Themes of love,
femininity, and societal concerns are frequently explored in her writings. The book "The
True and the Plain" and the short story collection "The Hand of the Enemy" are notable
works.
REGION 2
1. Lualhati Bautista - Born in Tuguegarao, Cagayan, Lualhati Bautista is a highly
acclaimed Filipino writer known for her novels and screenplays. Her novel "Dekada '70"
became a literary and film classic, exploring the struggles and awakening of a middle-
class Filipino family during the Martial Law era.
2. Rogelio Mangahas - A poet and essayist, Rogelio Mangahas hails from Ilagan, Isabela.
He is known for his introspective and contemplative writing style. Mangahas has
received numerous awards for his poetry, including the prestigious Palanca Awards in the
Philippines.
3. F. Sionil Jose - Although F. Sionil Jose was born in Rosales, Pangasinan, he is considered

Saga," a five-part series that chronicles the history and struggles of the Philippines.

5. Nestor Vicente Madali Gonzalez - Born in Romblon, Romblon, Gonzalez spent a
significant part of his life in Tuguegarao, Cagayan. He is known for his short stories and

REGION 3
1. Nick Joaquin (1917-2004) - Born in Paco, Manila, Nick Joaquin is considered one of the
greatest Filipino writers and is often referred to as the "National Artist for Literature." His
works span various genres, including fiction, essays, and plays. Joaquin's notable works
include the novel "The Woman Who Had Two Navels" and the short story collection
"May Day Eve."
2. Bienvenido Santos (1911-1996) - Although Bienvenido Santos was born in Tondo,
Manila, he spent a significant part of his life in the province of Pangasinan, which is part
of Region 3. Santos was a prolific writer known for his short stories and novels that

REGION 5
1. Francisco "Simeon" Reyes (1903-1987) - Francisco Reyes, known by his pen name

one of the pioneers of Bicol literature and made significant contributions to the
