1. (i) State the pinching theorem and use it to calculate the following limit

2 2
lim 5 + 3x + 2x sin(log |x|) .
x→0

(ii) Explain why L’Hôpital’s rule can be applied to only one of the two limits

log(1 − x) log(1 + x)
lim , lim
x→0 e3x − tan x + cos x x→0 e3x − tan x − cos x

and apply it to calculate this limit. Calculate the other limit using any other
approach.
(iii) Use Taylor series to calculate the limit

e2x − cos(x) − sin(2x)

lim .
x→0 3xex − sin(3x)

2. (i) Show that (x+y)−1 is an integrating factor for the ordinary differential equation

y
dx + 1 + e (x + y) dy = 0

and hence find an implicit form for the solution y(x) that satisfies the initial
condition y(1) = 0.
(ii) Find the general solution of the ordinary differential equation

y 00 + 4y 0 + 4y = 6e−2x .

3. (i) Calculate the integral

π/4
[(1 + 2x)4 + x log(1 + x2 )] sec2 x
Z
dx.
−π/4 1 + 24x2 + 16x4

(ii) For integer n ≥ 0 define Z π

In = xn sin x dx.
0
Derive a recurrence relation between In+2 and In and hence calculate I4 .

4. (a) Let D be the region of the (x, y) plane where the following inequalities are all
satisfied: x2 + y 2 ≤ 2, x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0, y ≤ x2 .
Sketch the region D and list the (x, y) coordinates of the three points on the
boundary of D where at least two of the above inequalities become equalities.
(b) Calculate the double integral
ZZ
xy dxdy
D

where D is the region given in part (a).

X πx X 1 πx
α+β cos (2m + 1) +γ 2
sin (2m + 1)
m=0
(2m + 1) 2 m=0
(2m + 1) 2

where α, β, γ are constants.

(a) Determine the values of the constants α, β, γ.

(b) By evaluating the Fourier series at x = 0, determine the value of

X (−1)m

m=0
2m + 1

(c) Show that evaluating the Fourier series at x = 1 gives a result that is consistent
with Dirichlet’s theorem.
(d) Apply Parseval’s theorem to determine the value of

X 1
2
.
m=0
(2m + 1)
