S.Y. 2020-2021

Name of Student : Learning Area : Science

Grade level : 10 Quarter : 4

I. Introductory Concept
From Grades 3-7 you have studied some of the different organisms
and their easily observable characteristics. Now you will learn about the concept of
biodiversity, specifically the variety of organisms living on Earth. This will show you
the advantages of high biodiversity over low biodiversity which will help you
recognize the value of biodiversity in your community and to encourage you to start
community’s biodiversity for future generations.
Biodiversity is coined from the words, biological diversity. The term
biodiversity refers to the variety of life on earth at all its levels, from genes to
ecosystems., and can encompass the evolutionary, ecological, and cultural
processes that sustain life. The term biodiversity was first coined by Walter G.
Rosen in 1986. Biological diversity abbreviated as biodiversity represent the sum
total of various life forms such as unicellular fungi, protozoa, bacteria and multi
cellular organisms such as plants, fishes, and mammals at various biological levels
including genes, habitats and ecosystem.
Ecosystems with low biodiversity do not have many different species of
organisms. Low biodiversity is when there are a few prominent species and a low
number of other species within the habitat. Low biodiversity has an impact to the
environment and to other organisms such as food reduction, vulnerability to
disasters and ecological imbalance. Ecosystems with high biodiversity have many
different species of organisms. High biodiversity is a habitat or ecosystem that has
a high number of different species.

Importance of High Biodiversity

1. Increase ecosystem productivity.
2. Support a larger number of plant species and
therefore, a greater variety of crops.
3. Protect freshwater resources.
4. Promote soil formation and protection.
5. Provide nutrient storage and recycling.
6. Aid in breaking down pollutants and contribute
to climate stability.
7. Speed recovery from natural disasters.
8. Provide more food, medicinal resources and
pharmaceutical drugs. Figure 1. Rainforest, A high
9. Offer environment for recreation and tourism. biodiversity ecosystem
Levels of Biodiversity

1. Species diversity refers to

different kinds of organisms. The
number of different species in an
area. For example, monkeys,
dragonflies, and meadow beauties
are all different species. Meadow beautyDragonfly Saski monkey
2. Genetic diversity refers to
genetic information that organisms
contain. All the different genes
within all the members of the
population. Chihuahuas, beagles,
and rottweilers are all the same
species —but they're not the same
because there is variety in their
genes. Chihuahua Beagle
3. Ecosystem diversity refers to Rottweilers
the different kinds of places where
organisms live and the
interconnections that bind these
organisms together. A variety of
habitats, communities and
ecological processes. Coral reef
and rock pool are marine
ecosystem.

II. Learning Skills from the MELCs

Explain the advantage of high biodiversity in maintaining the stability of an
ecosystem (S8LT-IVh-21)
Unpacked Learning Competency:
1. Identify the levels of biodiversity.
2. Differentiate low biodiversity from high biodiversity.
3. Explain the advantage of high biodiversity in maintain the stability of
ecosystem.
4. Give advantages of high biodiversity over low biodiversity.
5. Identify ecosystems with low and high biodiversity.
6. Predict what will happen to an ecosystem with low biodiversity.

Activity 3. High or Low!

Directions: Analyze the photos below and answer the questions that follows.

A.
1. Does this type of place have a high or low
biodiversity?
2. What will happen if a pest will attack
banana plants?
3. What will happen if a strong typhoon comes
and heavy flooding occurs?
4. How will this affect the helpers and owner
of the plantation?

B.

1. What group of organisms are

found in this ecosystem?
2. What benefits can the
community gain from this type of
ecosystem?
3. Predict the effect of the presence
of many bigger fish to the
ecosystem?
4. Do you consider this ecosystem
as having low biodiversity or high
biodiversity? Why?

found in this ecosystem? How
about plants?
2. How do these animals affect the
said ecosystem?
3. What will happen if there is a
sudden increase of rats in the rice
fields? How will the farmers be
affected?
4. Is the rice field an example of a
low biodiversity ecosystem or a
