Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 7 Self-Learning Module on Writing

Numbers in Scientific Notation!
This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.

LESSON

In our elementary lesson, we were taught how to write numbers in different

ways like in word form, expanded form and standard form. In this self-learning
lesson, we will learn a different way of writing the numbers.
In the different fields of work, numbers are oftentimes used just like in
banking, finance, engineers, accountants, chemists, scientists and the like. The kind
of numbers that they usually deal with is either extremely big or small numbers. Get
ready and learn how to write numbers in different ways.
Do you know that an average human
has 25 000 000 000 000 red blood cells
measures 0.0000078 in diameter in their body
and each cell completes a circulatory lap in
about twenty seconds. Can you visualized how
many red blood cells a human body have? And
how small it is?

The numbers 25 000 000 000 000 and 0.0000078 are numbers that is quite
difficult to read at the start because of the many digits on them. Do you think there
is an easier way to write the numbers?

Scientific notation is a method of writing very large or very small numbers as

a power of 10 in a simpler way. It is written in the form of a x 10 n, where a is a
decimal number greater than or equal to 1 but less than 10 and n is an integer.

Writing Numbers in Scientific Notation

Example 1. Write 25 000 000 000 000 in scientific notation.

Solution:
25 000 000 000 000 = 2.5 000 000 000 000
Move the decimal
13 places point 13 places to the
left. Write positive 13
= 2.5 x 1013 as the exponent of 10.

Example 2: Write 0.0000078 in scientific notation

Solution:
0.0000078 = 0.000007 8 Move the decimal
6 places point 6 places to the
right. Write negative 6
= 7.8 x 10 –6 as the exponent of 10.

Writing Numbers in Standard Notation

Example 1: Do you know what is the size of a corona virus? Its size is 1.2 x 10-7m.
that is really too small that cannot be seen by our naked eyes.
Write the 1.2 x 10-7 in standard notation.
Solution:
1. 2 x 10 -7 = 0.0000001.2 Since the exponent is negative,
7 places move the decimal point 7 places
to the left.

= 0.00000012 Add zeros as place holder.

Example 2: Do you know how many droplets are there when you sneeze?
Approximately there are 4 x 104 droplets in just a sneeze.
Write the 4 x 104 in standard form.
Solution:
4 x 104 = 40 000 Since the exponent is
positive, move the decimal
4 places point 4 places to the right.

= 40 000 Add zeros as place holder.

Example 3: Write the following numbers in scientific notation and vice versa.
A. 124 000 000 = __________________
B. 0. 00036 = __________________
C. 7.1 x 109 = __________________
D. 5.08 x 10-6 = __________________

Solutions:
A. 1.24 x 108
B. 3.6 x 10-4
C. 7 100 000 000
D. 0.00000508

ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITY 1: LET’S PRACTICE

Directions: Write the numbers in scientific notation.

1. 5 600 - ___________________
2. 4 567 000 - ___________________
3. 0.74 - ___________________
4. 0.00096 - ___________________

2. 7.8 x 109 - ___________________
3. 2.5 x 10-3 - ___________________
4. 9.1 x 10-6 - ___________________

ACTIVITY 3: TEST YOURSELF

Direction: Read each statement carefully and write the numbers in scientific
notation or vice versa.

______________________ 1. DSWD has an estimated budget of 199 000 000 000 pesos
for the “ Bayanihan To Heal as One Act “.

______________________ 2. According to DSWD, around 1.8 x 107 families will be

given the Social Amelioration Program nationwide.

______________________ 3. Each family beneficiary will receive a total amount of

16 000 pesos.
______________________ 4. An estimate of 2.06 x 105 Pasigueño families are eligible
for the emergency subsidy from the Department of
Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
______________________ 5. But, only 93,000 families were approved by the DSWD
in Pasig City.

WRAP-UP

Remember that…

Scientific notation is written in the form of a x 10n.

To write Scientific Notation to Standard Form:

• Move the decimal point to the first factor to the number of places
indicated by the exponent of the power of 10.
• If the exponent is positive, move the decimal point to the right. If the
exponent is negative, move the decimal point to the left.
To write Decimal Number to Scientific Notation:
• Place the decimal point to the first non-zero digit.
• Move the decimal point and count the number of moves to be used as
the exponent.
• If the given number is greater than 10, use positive exponent. If the
original number is between 0 and 1, use negative exponent.
VALUING

Reflections: (Journal Writing)

In this lesson, we encountered very large and very small numbers that can
sometimes lead to difficulty in reading and writing. And we learned that there is a
simple way to write those kind of numbers. In life, we are given at times big or small
opportunities, complicated or simple problems, and many other challenges. Unlike
Math, facing our real-life problems have no short-cuts; you have to go through the
process to learn the lessons in life. Based on experience, how do you handle both
your big and smalls problems? Did you try the short-cut way of solving it? What
lessons did you get? Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.
