DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT AND PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING
Psychological Assessment is a broad concept which includes different
techniques to study the cognitive functioning and other abilities or behavior of human beings. In contrast, Psychological Testing is a process of all the possible uses, applications, and underlying concepts of psychological and educational tests. The assessment of human characteristics involves observations, interviews, checklists, inventories, Projective tests, and other psychological tests. Psychological Testing uses Psychological Tests. Psychological Assessment is a more comprehensive term, referring to the entire process of compiling information about a person and using it to make inferences about characteristics and to predict behavior. Psychological Testing represents only one source of information used in the assessment process. Psychological Assessment is a complex process. Each assessment involves various procedures (interviewing, observation, testing etc.) and dimensions. Psychological Testing is simpler process which typically involves unidimensional technique. Psychological Assessment answers a question, solves a problem, or helps in decision through the use of different scientific tools. Psychological Testing only collects numerical information. Psychological Assessment uses various source of data i.e Subject, Friends, Neighbors, Teachers, Relatives etc. Psychological Testing collects data only through the Tester. Psychological Assessment is a lengthy process. It takes few hours to few days or even more. Psychological Testing takes few minutes to few hours. Psychological Assessment represents Idiographic nature. It focuses on the uniqueness of a person, group or a situation. Psychological Testing focuses on Nomothetic approach. It finds the difference between individuals and the groups. In Psychological Assessment, the assesser has the knowledge of Testing and other assessment techniques, also the area which are being assessed. In Psychological Testing, the tester possess the knowledge of Tests and Testing. Psychological Assessment is typically individualized. It focuses on the different functioning od a person. Psychological Testing may be individual or group in nature. Psychological Assessment is based on Subjectivity. Quantification is rarely possible. Psychological Testing requires objectivity. In this quantification is critical. Psychological Assessment is an expensive process. It requires highly qualified professional whereas Psychological Testing is not expensive. Psychological Assessment is both structured and unstructured but Psychological Testing is highly structured. The greater complexity of the Psychological assessment process makes its results far more difficult to evaluate. The results of Psychological Testing can be evaluated easily.
