I. Title: Spiritually Sensitive Intervention to Mitigate Depressive Symptoms Among

Hospitalized Children Affected With Congenital Heart Diseases: Insights for
Holistic Pediatric Nursing
Author: Samta P. Pandya, MA, MPhil, PhD
Source: Journal of Holistic Nursing
Year of Publication: 2019

II. Summary

➢ This journal article aims to determine whether a specialized spiritually sensitive

intervention (SSI) could alleviate depressive symptoms in hospitalized children
with congenital heart diseases (CHD). It highlighted how hospitalization of
children with CHD frequently results in stress and trauma for both the children
and family members, providing justification on interventions to foster coping and
lessen detrimental effects with the use of the individualized SSI. The SSI has 5
program components that is composed of age-appropriate activities that is
created to examine its effects on the depressive symptoms of children with CHD:
namely, (Day 1 of Program Component 1 is devoted to stilling and centering,
which involves sitting still while listening to organ music and sitting still in silence for
five to ten minutes while paying close attention to breathing); (Program
Component 2-Day 2: Living in the moment including a discussion on the value of
the "now" and "present" and an animated story narration about the futility of
worrying about the past and the future.); (Program Component 3-Day 3: Self and
body awareness: recognizing the human body as a divine creation; awareness
of each bodily part as a distinctive creation of the universe; and understanding
that illness is only transitory and that healing is inevitable.); (Program Component
4-Day 4: Appreciation and gratitude for life: life as a divine gift; and all living
forms (including people, animals, and nature) as distinctive and exquisite.);
(Program Component 5-Day 5: The power of petitionary prayer: God or the
divine as a friend who will listen to concerns and difficulties; and how to surrender
all anxieties, sadness, and troubles to God and find freedom.). To better
determine the effectivity of an SSI in nursing intervention, this study divided the
participants into two groups: treatment group (who received SSI) and control
group (who received standard intervention and play activities) so that it can
determine whether SSI can be more effective and act as an alternative nursing
intervention to lower depressive symptoms to CHD-affected children. To gain
patient compliance, sessions were designed to be delivered through a blend of
narrative with plain, realistic characters; age-appropriate one-on-one
conversation; hands-on activities; and take-home lessons. Following the
administration of the SSI model, it revealed a substantial difference between the
treatment group and the control group and this Spiritually Sensitive intervention is
recommended as a practice for holistic nursing

III. Nursing Implications

A. To Nursing Practice
➢ This study manifests a great help to improve the nursing practice. This gives
nurses a greater comprehension of how adaptable nursing interventions are and
enables them to accommodate various types, like the SSI model that was
discussed. These kinds of interventions can be useful pediatric nursing and health
care intervention not only for children hospitalized with CHD, but also for other
pediatric patients; that promotes and enhances their well-being. Additionally, it
provides nurses with a vision of how to assist and care for vulnerable children
who develop depressive symptoms in connection with serious life and health
issues.
B. To Nursing Education
➢ This study has a very good impact on nursing curriculum in terms of knowledge,
abilities, performance confidence, and attitude toward learning. It does not only
teach potential nurses on what to expect when caring for children, but also
incorporates psychiatric therapeutic conversation with them to prevent their
mental health from deteriorating. The study also focuses on the KSA in relation to
nursing curriculum, including knowledge of the various pediatric nursing
interventions on therapies that are acceptable and effective in use, skills that a
student nurse can acquire in adapting to convenient nursing interventions for
both the young patient and nurse, and a positive attitude a nurse must possess
toward challenging interactions towards young patients in order to improve their
mental well-being.
C. To Nursing Research
➢ This study provides knowledge on certain nursing interventions that could
enhance mental health outcomes and objectives in a pediatric nursing in a
certain aspect only, which is children affected with CHD. This journal contributes
to nursing research in order for pediatric holistic nurses to deliver patients with
effective evidence-based care which seeks to be a dependable source of
knowledge in the field. Though the SSI has already been tested for its
effectiveness, there are still limitations to it. Firstly, is there is no data on the
depressive symptoms of children with CHD and it does not show its effectiveness
on the self-use or without the availability of guidance on the use of the SSI. The
recommendation that can be formulated is that it can also create other SSIs in
other fields of nursing that can also help other patients, like for geriatric patients
and such.

IV. Personal Insights

➢ My personal insights about this journal is that it is very helpful in the practice,
education, and research in nursing. I strongly agree to the scope and objective
of the study which aims to create an effective Spiritually Sensitive Intervention
that alleviates the negative determinants of mental health among children with
major life and health issues, such as children affected with CHD. Especially that,
compared to the general population, children who have a chronic health
condition, whether it was identified at birth or developed later in life, are more
likely to experience mental health problems. Us, as nurses have roles in helping
these children cope with the major health issues they are concerned of, not only
in the scope of being free from morbidity but for their whole wellness and being.
