Remote Job Interview Tips

TestYourTechnology
Make sure your computer, webcam, and microphone are working properly. If
you're using a laptopyou don't have to worry about it because it comes with
the communication hardwareyou need to attend an online interview.

Yourinternet connection is important to make sure there is no disturbance

and lagging when you're having your remote job interviews. I would
recommend having at least 100Mbps internet in Malaysia though 5-10Mbps is
sufficient forvideo conferencing. Most of us should have UniFi or broadband
at home so internet stabilityshouldn't be an issue.

Familiarizeyourselfwith video conferencing platforms like Zoom, Microsoft

Teams, Google Meet, Webex Meetings and more.
Create A Professional Setting
Choose a quiet and well-lit room forthe online interview. Set up a clean,
uncluttered background or use a virtual background if necessary. Most ofthe
video conferencing platforms allowyou to bluryour background or use
virtual backgrounds.

And the most important thing is good lighting, preferablyfacing you, to make
you visible and clear on the camera.
Dress Professionally

Howwill you dress up ifyou're attending an in-person interview? Do the same

from head to toe. Apart from making you look professional, it also helps you
get into a professional mindset and boosts your confidence.

Avoid overly bright or patterned clothing that may be distracting on camera.

Practice Digital Communication Skills

Youneed to have better audio clarityfor remote job interviews. Practice

speaking clearly at a moderate pace. The most common mistake people make
is that theytend to look at the screen and not the camera during the
interview. Just maintain your eye contact by looking at the webcam.

Practice with a friend orfamily member over a video call to get feedback and
get yourself digitally prepared forthe interview.

remote work policies, team communication, performance evaluation and
anything relevant to yourjobtasks and the company.
Have YourStories Ready

We are not talking about fairytales here. Be readyto discuss yourwork

experiences, especiallythose that demonstrateskills relevant to remote work
like yourself-discipline, time management, and communication.

Tellthem whyyou're the best candidateforthe position compared to others.

Highlight Technicaland Soft Skills

Be prepared to talk about yourtechnical skills and howthey align with the job
requirements. Youcan also includeyour portfolio and highlightyourside
projects.

Make sure to emphasizesoft skills that are important for remote worksuch as
reliability,self-motivation, problem-solving and teamwork.
Have Necessary Documents Ready

Keepyour resume, job descriptions, and any other reference documents

readily available on your computer or laptop. Having easy access to important
documents during the interview can be helpful when the interviewer requests
them.

Although not all interviewers request forthem during the interviewsession,

it's betterto be prepared.
Mindset and Body Language

Stay positive and confident during the interview. Yourbody language can
convey a lot, even through video.

Being nervous is normal when you're meeting someone new, especially

during an interview. Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing and
positive visualization. It can certainly make you feel better.
Prepare for the Unexpected

There are high chances for unexpected events to happen such as power
failure, internet connection failure and many more incidents.

Tryto have your interviewer's phone number handyso that you can keep
them informed of any unexpected events.
Follow-Up
Afterthe interview, send a thankyou email. Reiterate your interest in the
position and the value you can bring to the team and organization.
By carefully preparingforthe above-mentioned aspects, you can
demonstrateyour professionalism and readiness forthe job as well as forthe
remote work environment.
