4 1 Introduction

1.1 General
The Host computer concept for MAGNETOM ESSENZA systems is the same as used for all
syngo MR systems, i e. the Host is based on PC hardware.
This is true for both the main console (MRC) and the optional satellite console (MRSC).
Fig. 1: MRC components

What is new compared to older systems is that the measurement control (AMC) and the
image reconstruction system (MRIR) are combined in one single computer system called
MARS (Measurement And Reconstruction System).

1.2 Overview
Before you continue, a few words on the designations used throughout the Host descrip‐
tion may be in order to avoid unnecessary confusion.
The term Host refers simply to a computing element that is used to control a system or
act as its "host". The "host" of our MR system is termed "MR Console", “MRAWP-MR”, or
MRC for short.
In addition to the MRC, an optional satellite MR console, or MRSC is available. Although
practically the same as the MRC, it is only intended for post-processing images. For this
reason, it may not contain some of the hardware components found in the MRC. Also, the
software configuration will be different, since the MRSC does not require all that system
control software. A description of the main differences is provided on the next page.

1.3 Function

1.3.1 MR console (MRC)

The major tasks of the Host (MRC/MRAWP) are:
n User interface (syngo) - provides the hardware and software for the user interface
n Converts sequence measurement parameters from the user into system-specific com‐
mands and passes these on to the MARS
n Image post-processing and image display functionalities
n Archiving (mass storage, filming)
The MRC is connected to the MR system via an Ethernet LAN connection. This network
connection will be referred to as the "internal network".

1.3.2 MR satellite console (MRSC)

The MR satellite console (MRSC/MRWP) is an option. Its major tasks are:
n Image viewing
n Post-processing
n Archiving images
The MRSC Host connects to the Host MRC over an additional Ethernet switch, delivered
with the MRSC option. This switch is required to decouple the large volume of image data
transfers from the customer’s LAN. This network connection will be referred to as the
"outside network", or "customer network".
The configuration of the MRSC computer is the same as the MRC Host with one excep‐
tion: no pixel data hard drive (database and pixel data on one hard disk only).

2.1 External devices

Fig. 5: External devices n The MARS outputs the boot process
steps over the serial interface to the
host. The host only dumps this out‐
put into the MrTTYSRecorderBE.log
log file under C:\MedCom\log. It
does not evaluate the log contents.

n Video 2 connection is only for ES‐

SENZA Dot.

 The MARS - MRAWP serial cable must be properly connected to both units. Otherwise,
MARS boot problems will occur.

 For FRUs, see the Spare Parts Catalog.

The USB keyboard and mouse must be connected to the correct ports, as specified on
 the label on the host. Otherwise, problems may occur when software is being installed
on the host.

The host can switch the system into standby by sending a signal to the appropriate relay
in the Line Power Distribution section. In standby mode, all system components are
switched off with the exception of the MRC and MRSC hosts.
Switching those components back on (exiting standby mode) is possible only via power-
on button in the alarm box. A remote switch-on from standby is not possible.
