2 Host 8
1.1 General
The Host computer concept for MAGNETOM ESSENZA systems is the same as used for all
syngo MR systems, i e. the Host is based on PC hardware.
This is true for both the main console (MRC) and the optional satellite console (MRSC).
Fig. 1: MRC components
What is new compared to older systems is that the measurement control (AMC) and the
image reconstruction system (MRIR) are combined in one single computer system called
MARS (Measurement And Reconstruction System).

1.2 Overview
Before you continue, a few words on the designations used throughout the Host descrip‐
tion may be in order to avoid unnecessary confusion.
The term Host refers simply to a computing element that is used to control a system or
act as its "host". The "host" of our MR system is termed "MR Console", “MRAWP-MR”, or
MRC for short.
In addition to the MRC, an optional satellite MR console, or MRSC is available. Although
practically the same as the MRC, it is only intended for post-processing images. For this
reason, it may not contain some of the hardware components found in the MRC. Also, the
software configuration will be different, since the MRSC does not require all that system
control software. A description of the main differences is provided on the next page.
Fig. 3: Host and MARS
1.3 Function
The MARS - MRAWP serial cable must be properly connected to both units. Otherwise,
MARS boot problems will occur.
The USB keyboard and mouse must be connected to the correct ports, as specified on
the label on the host. Otherwise, problems may occur when software is being installed
on the host.
The host can switch the system into standby by sending a signal to the appropriate relay
in the Line Power Distribution section. In standby mode, all system components are
switched off with the exception of the MRC and MRSC hosts.
Switching those components back on (exiting standby mode) is possible only via power-
on button in the alarm box. A remote switch-on from standby is not possible.
