HOMEWORK
PROJECTS

YEAR 8

YEAR 8
Autumn Term 2023-2024
Independent Homework
Projects
Homework is an essential way of encouraging independence in learning. For homework to be
effective there must be consistency in school practice combined with parental support. This
booklet is designed so that pupils, teachers and parents are all able to work together to ensure
the best outcomes for learning.

At St Edmund’s the aim of our Independent Homework Projects are to:

• consolidate, support or extend what pupils are learning in the classroom.

• assist teachers in assessing pupil’s strengths and learning needs.
• develop pupil’s skills.
• stretch and challenge students.
• develop a greater sense of responsibility and independence.
• celebrate hard work and success of pupils.

What are Independent Homework Projects?

Independent Homework Projects (IHP’s) are specific pieces of work which are set as a project.
Whilst they have a clear focus students are able to work independently developing their own
direction of learning and unique outcomes.

IHP’s are set in all subjects each term and twice a term for English and Maths. All the tasks
are published in advance and each one has a fixed start and finish date. Pupils are responsible
for completing IHP’s and will be given support and advice by their teachers.

How will the IHP’s be marked?

Each pupil will receive a feedback sheet from their teacher giving a grade, a comment about the
progress made in the project and a target for future improvement. The homework grades
correspond to the grades given on the termly Progress Reviews and are as follows:

4: Excellent: Completed the work to the highest standard or has gone beyond the required
task.
3: Good: Completed the work to the highest standard.
2: Satisfactory: Completed the work to the required standard.

I can do all things with the help of God who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
1: Unsatisfactory: Work not completed or not completed to the required standard.

What will happen if the IHP is not completed?

If the pupil does not complete an IHP they will be set a 1-hour detention by the department
concerned to finish the work. Parents will be informed by text. If there is a genuine reason
why a pupil cannot complete an IHP it is essential that parents inform the school before the
deadline date.

Support in completing IHP’s

Subject teachers will provide advice and support for pupils and the School LLRC is open before
and after school each day where computers, books and other resources are available to support
pupils.

Other Homework

Literacy

Pupils will be expected to read at home each week. Their reading record should be completed
and signed by parents and tutors every week.

Numeracy

The Maths Department will issue homework weekly.

Additional Learning Tasks

These may also be set by teachers. These could be about 20 minutes in length and will be
recorded in the pupil’s planner.

If you have any further questions or concerns about homework please contact your child’s tutor,
Head of Learning or the appropriate Head of Department.

NB: The Aims and Objectives of each homework are laid out as follows:

WALT = We are learning to.

WILF = What I’m looking for.

Pupils are familiar with these terms as the aims and objectives of every lesson should be
described in this way.

Mathematics Homework

Mathematics homework will be set each week.

It will take 30 minutes to complete. The due date will always be Monday.

The homework will reflect what has been taught recently and include some recollection
of older topics. (This will help you remember stuff for longer!)

We use the website www.sparxmaths.uk for homework.

To demonstrate initiative in extending your own learning, and earning a personal quality
score of 4 for effort, you will need to complete the XP Boost of Target questions
occasionally too 😊

Your homework book should be used for working and keeping track of the correct
answers for each question. We will periodically ask to see these!

How to use Sparx Maths

Go to www.sparxmaths.uk and use the school’s postcode to find Saint Edmund’s on the
drop-down menu, then enter your login details.

You will see the below screen and a list of your current compulsory homework
(homework you should do!). Clicking on XP Boost or Target will provide you with extra
personalised practice 😊

Year 8 - Technology: Graphics

Project Due in on: 18th September 2023 Marked by: 2nd October 2023

This Project should take between 2 and 3 hours.

WALT: Understand paper engineering and gain inspiration from professional

Graphic Artists.

WILF: Well made, creative and exciting work that engages the end user.

What you have to do:

Research the term ‘Paper Engineering’ and look at images of this.

no bigger than A3 and you can borrow some materials from school if need be.

Top tips:

What not to do: Leave your homework till the last minute, one of the main
objectives of homework is to see if you can meet deadlines. You will need a
computer and printer for most tasks so make sure that you have proof read and
printed out your work in time. You will not be allowed to print out homework in
the lesson on the day that it is due.

14

I can do all things with the help of God who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
Don’t just copy and paste loads of boring, irrelevant text from a website that
you haven’t read yourself or which contains words that you would never use. Use
your own words to say clearly what you have understood about the topic,
describe images and say why you like or dislike them: Include your own opinions.

Do use printed pictures, images and illustrations, this is a visual subject and
your work should be visually stimulating and engaging. Remember a picture can
speak a thousand words.

Do be creative and imaginative, take risks and present your work in an original
way and try your best.

Do visit the graphics room to borrow some paper and card or see if there are
any unusual materials you can borrow to take home.

Do read through the instructions carefully as soon as you get the task not an
hour before it is due, do ask your teacher to explain things if you don’t
understand but again not on the due date.

How your work will be assessed.

Your work will be given a grade as follows.

research must include clear printed images of the artist’s work, information
about the artist and your own opinions. You could answer these questions: Why
have you chosen this artist? Are you inspired by this artist’s work? How has the
artist shown clear links to marine life and the sea within their work? Describe
the mixed media and techniques that the artist has used.
Tip: Do not copy and paste pages of irrelevant text from Wikipedia etc. Write
information using your own work and check spelling.
Task 2: Produce 2 drawings of how you could use the Artists work within
textiles. Could the textiles be turned into a bag? A cushion? A wall hanging?
Include annotation to explain your ideas.
Tip: You can use any drawing media/drawing style. Include colour and clear
annotation that shows links to the artists you have researched into. Your 2
designs need to both fit onto an A4 piece of paper.

Year 8 - ICT

Project Due in on: 2nd October 2023 Marked by: 16th October 2023

This Project should take between 2 and 3 hours.

WALT: Web Design.

WILF:

1) Understand the basics of web design and HTML.

2) Develop creativity and design skills.

3) Apply knowledge of colour, layout and typography to create a visually pleasing

webpage.

4) Enhance digital literacy by incorporating pictures.

5) Gain experience in organising and presenting information effectively.

What you have to do:

In this creative homework project, you will embark on a web design adventure to
create your own webpage! You have the freedom to choose a topic or theme that
interests you and explore various creative opportunities to make your webpage
visually appealing and engaging. This project is expected to take between 2 and
3 hours to complete.

Steps:
1) Choose a Topic: Select a topic or theme for your webpage. It could be a
hobby, a favourite book, a dream travel destination, or anything else that
excites you.

21

I can do all things with the help of God who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
2) Plan Your Content: Write down the main sections and subtopics you want to
include on your webpage. Consider what information, images, and multimedia
elements will best represent your chosen topic.
3) Design and Layout: Use paper and pencil to sketch a rough layout of your
webpage. Think about where different elements, such as text, images, and
videos, will be placed. Experiment with different arrangements to find the
most visually appealing design.
4) Create Your Webpage: a) HTML Basics: Use a text editor (such as Notepad
or Notepad++) to write the HTML code for your webpage. Begin with the
basic structure of HTML, including the <html>, <head>, and <body> tags. b)
Add Content: Incorporate the sections and subtopics you planned earlier into
your HTML code. Use appropriate HTML tags (e.g., <h1>, <p>, <img>) to
structure and format your content. c) Enhance with Multimedia: Make your
webpage visually engaging by adding images, videos, or interactive elements.
Explore the <img> and <video> tags, and consider embedding external content
(e.g., YouTube videos or interactive widgets). d) Styling and Design: Use CSS
(Cascading Style Sheets) to apply colours, fonts, and layouts to your
webpage. Experiment with different styles and consider using CSS
frameworks like Bootstrap to make your design more dynamic.
5) Test and Refine: View your webpage in a web browser to see how it looks and
behaves. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure it functions correctly
and is visually appealing across different devices.
6) Present and Share: Once you are satisfied with your webpage, upload a copy
to Teams, your teacher will have shown you in a previous lesson how to.

Challenge:

1) Interactive Form: Create an interactive form on your webpage that allows

users to submit their information. Include fields such as name, email, and a
text area for comments. Use HTML form elements like <input>, <textarea>,
and <button>. Apply CSS to style the form and consider adding validation to
ensure required fields are filled.

22

I can do all things with the help of God who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
2) Slideshow or Image Carousel: Implement a slideshow or image carousel on
your webpage to showcase a series of images related to your chosen topic.
Use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create an automatic or manual slideshow.
Add navigation buttons or indicators to allow users to control the slideshow
and view different images.

3) Responsive Design: Challenge yourself to make your webpage responsive,

meaning it adjusts and looks good on different screen sizes and devices. Use
media queries in your CSS code to apply different styles based on the
device's width. Experiment with breakpoints and consider rearranging or
resizing elements to ensure a pleasant user experience across various
devices, including desktops, tablets, and smartphones.

Top Tips:

1) Basic HTML Structure:

<!DOCTYPE html>

Create a clear and detailed character profile that explores why your character
is considered different in the novel.

What you have to do:

Create a character profile that explores the following:
The role of your chosen character within the novel.
How this character (s) reflects or challenges stereotypes at the time.
Context information of general stereotypes for the time/place your novel is set.
Relationships with other characters and how those other characters respond to
them.
Extension Task:
Create a superhero profile for your chosen character – turn something they are
judged into their greatest strength!

25

I can do all things with the help of God who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
Key Word: Stereotyping.
Stereotypes are over-generalisations about the characteristic of an entire
group usually based on physical traits or the place they are from. While
stereotypes have been popularly perceived as having negative connotations, they
can also have positive ones as well.

How you can do your work?

Choose one (or more) ‘outsider’ character (s) and create a clear character
profile for them.
You may create this profile as a:
Collage.
Poster.
Powerpoint.
Leaflet.
Facebook/Instagram page or series of TikToks.
Video report.

Top Tips:
Do Research into stereotypes and how these are presented in the time in which
your novel is set.
Do use specific information from the novel to develop your ideas.
Do speak to your teacher at LEAST a week before it is due if you are stuck.
Don’t copy and paste information.
Don’t copy an existing profile.
Don’t be rude! This is designed to help you understand the negative impact of
stereotyping/making someone an outsider.
Don’t prioritise presentation over content (write more than you can draw!).

Top Tips:

Complete your project in your own words, using words and key terms that you
understand. If you do not fully understand a key term then you need to find out
what it means.
Complete detailed and accurate research for your topic before you create your
resources.
Make your work engaging- include headings, images, tables, speech bubbles.
If you are creating a video then make sure that you have scripted, rehearsed
and edited your work before completing.
Use the word ‘because’. This will allow you to explain the meaning of the
different beliefs and ideas.
Refer to specific real-life examples of beliefs and actions to show clear
understanding.
When using quotes, make sure you say where the quote has come from. E.g.
Bible, CCC.
When including quotes in your project you should also take time to explain the
meaning. E.g. This means that…
Finally, if you are submitting homework electronically it must be uploaded using
the assignments function on Microsoft Teams only.

Year 8 – Drama

Project Due in on: 13th November 2023 Marked by: 27th November 2023

This Project should take between 2 and 3 hours.

WALT: Develop your understanding of Melodrama.

WILF:
You show an understanding of the main techniques found within a Melodrama
performance.
You show an understanding of the stock characters found within a Melodrama
performance.
Your project is imaginative, creative and well-presented.

What you have to do:

You will need to work individually, or in small groups (maximum 5), to create a
performance in the style of a Melodrama. You are currently learning about
Melodrama in lessons so this project is designed to complement this. Your
project should be creative and imaginative. Remember this is a DRAMA project!

How you can do your work?

Your project can be completed in the form of either:
A script – this could be presented in written form, or alternatively you could
record your script being performed as a radio-play.
A recorded performance of a Melodrama– this should be pre-recorded and
brought in on either a USB or DVD so that it can be easily watched by your
teacher. Your performance could be presented in a range of different ways for
example: live action, animation or by using puppets.

35

I can do all things with the help of God who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
Signposts to help you complete the task:
You must include the following stock characters:
-Hero.
-Villain.
-Damsel in Distress.
-Wise Old Man/Woman.
-Comic Sidekick.
Here is a typical Melodrama storyline. You do not have to follow this exactly; it
would be brilliant if you could add in some of your own ideas too:
-The Hero and the Damsel in Distress are in love.
-The Villain, along with his Comic Sidekick, plots to capture the Damsel in
Distress.
-The Villain captures the Damsel in Distress and ties her to a train line.
-The Hero realises the Damsel in Distress has been captured and goes to the
Wise Old Man/Woman for advice on how to save her.
-The Hero and the Villain fight for the honour of the Damsel in Distress. The
Hero Wins!
-The Hero and the Damsel in Distress live happily ever after!
A Script:
You will need to carry out some research into what a typical Melodrama plot
might look like. When writing your script think carefully about:
1. The storyline – What typically happens in a Melodrama performance?
2. The characters – Who are the stereotypical or stock characters found in
Melodrama?
3. The language used within a Melodrama script.
4. Including stage directions to make it clear how your Pantomime should be
performed.
5. How your script is structured.
6. Your script needs to have a clear start, middle and end and it must be a
complete story. Remember that good always wins over evil at the end!
Remember that you could present your script in written form, as a radio-play.

36

I can do all things with the help of God who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
Think carefully about how you present your work. Using IT will make your
work look much neater and more professional.

A recorded performance of a Melodrama:

Create your own version of a Melodrama and work in a group to perform it:
Think carefully about:
1. The storyline – what typically happens in a Melodrama performance?
2. The characters – who are the stereotypical or stock characters found in
Melodrama?
3. The language used within a Melodrama performance.
4. Make sure you use over-exaggerated movement and voice.
5. What props, costumes and setting you will use for your Melodrama
performance.
6. How you will record your performance – could you use puppets, animation, or
do you want to perform in it yourself?
7. How you will record your performance. Remember, if you don’t have access
to a camera, you can arrange to film your performance at school, just speak
to your teacher.
Make sure your work is not copied from any other source – it should be your
own.

Top Tips:

Do make sure you include all of the stock characters in your Melodrama plot.

Do stick to the typical Melodrama plot.

Do remember that if you are working in a group, the length of your homework
should reflect the number of people you are working with.

Do try to use costumes and props if doing a performance of a Melodrama.

37

I can do all things with the help of God who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
Don’t copy scripts from the internet – it should be your own work.

Don’t leave your homework until the last minute, as if you want your teacher to
film your performance it needs to be arranged in advance.

How your work will be assessed.

Your work will be given a grade as follows:

4. Excellent: Completed the work to the highest standard or has gone
beyond the required task.
3. Good: Completed or attempted the work to a high standard.
2. Satisfactory: Completed to the required standard.
1. Unsatisfactory: Not completed to the required standard.

ISLAND MAN

Morning

And Island man wakes up

To the sound of blue surf

In his head

The steady breaking and wombing

Wild seabirds

And fisherman pulling out to sea

The sun surfacing defiantly

From the east

Of his small emerald island

He always comes back groggily groggily

Comes back to sands

Of a grey metallic soar

To surge of wheels

To dull North Circular roar

Muffling muffling

His crumpled pillow waves

Island man heaves himself

Another London day
