Course Description
This course provides an overview of the computing concepts. It introduces the basic theory,
computer systems and technology elements. It covers the basic concepts on hardware,
software, data representations and networks. This will equip the students with the necessary
knowledge and skills required for Information Technology engineers.
Course Learning Outcomes
CLO1. Explain the importance of the course in relation to the goals and objectives of the
program, the College and the University.
CLO2. Identify the various types of computer software, hardware, data representations and
networks and recognize the importance of computers as tools in the information age.
CLO3. Integrate the use of computer/information technology whenever and wherever
applicable or possible.
CLO4. Relate knowledge and skills acquired from the course to the needs of the society and
adhere to becoming an information technology engineer someday.
Topics / Modules and Intended Learning Outcomes

Topic 1: Basic Theory


Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):
ILO1. Identify the computer’s basic data unit.
ILO2. Identify the computer data representation, focusing on numeric data and
character codes.
ILO3. Identify the different logical operations and be able to solve problems that involves
them.

Topic 2: Computer Component


Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):
ILO1. Describe the architecture, structure, scheme and operating principles of processor
and solve problems on processor performance.
ILO2. List the storage hierarchy, types of buses, input/output interfaces, device drivers and
input/output devices along with their characteristics.

Topic 3: System Component


Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):
ILO1. Identify the processing modes, usage and application areas of systems.
ILO2. Solve the reliability and availability of a given systems.

Topic 4: Algorithm and Programming


Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):
ILO1: Discuss the basic concepts and mechanism of data structures and identify the
different types of typical data structures and their characteristics.
ILO2. Identify and describe the different types of programming languages and their
characteristics

Topic 5: Network
Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):
ILO1: Enumerate the types of networks and their characteristics, transmission methods,
internetworking devices and network architecture.

Summative Assessment (Midterm/Final Assessment) 40%

A. Midterm Score: 10% Seatworks + 20% Exercises + 30%Quizzes + 40% Midterm Exam
B. Final Term Score : 10% Seatworks + 20% Exercises + 30%Quizzes + 40% Final Exam
Final Score: (Midterm Score + Final Score)/2
FINAL GRADE : transmuted Final Score
