Project 2nd Marking Period

This document provides instructions for a student project involving completing five geometric transformations of an original figure. The transformations include a translation moving the figure to the third quadrant, a reflection, a rotation that is not 0 or 360 degrees, a dilation with a center other than the origin, and a composition of two transformations. For each transformation, the student must show the original figure, transformed figure, transformation rule, and a table of coordinates.

U4 Transformations Project - Summative Grade for MP2-

DUE: ___________________
Project OVERVIEW:
You must complete f ive transformations to an original picture and display each image, the transformation rule
(algebraic notation), and the coordinates of both the original figure and the image. You may display your
transformations as a poster, booklet, or another form of presentation approved by your teacher.
Transformations:

● You will be creating 5 different graphs using the same original

figure.
● Original figure: With pencil, make a drawing that you can identify at least 10 vertices
on the grid. Be Creative. Your figure must include a minimum of 10 unique points and
should be more than just a simple two dimensional, closed, figure (for example, it cannot
be just a rectangle). You may use a copier to copy your original 5 times for each image.
o Your original figure needs to be placed in the 1st quadrant.
o Use a ruler to make the line segments straight in your drawings.
o Name each vertex (original and image' ).
● Graph # 1: Translation
o Choose a translation that will create an image of y our original figure and perform this
translation on the graph.
▪ Your translation n eeds to move the figure completely to the 3rd quadrant.
▪ Use different colors to help viewers visualize the difference between the image and
original figure.
o Under the graph of the original figure and its image, state the rule of transformation in both
algebraic notation.
o Also make a table that contains the coordinates of b oth the original and image’s vertices.
Clearly m ark the names of each vertex.
● Graph # 2: Reflection
o Choose a single reflection that will create an image of your original figure and p erform this
reflection on a NEW (2nd) graph.
▪ Use different colors to help viewers visualize the difference between the image and
original figure.
o State the transformation rule and the table using the same directions stated above (see Graph
# 1).
● Graph # 3: Rotation
o Choose a single rotation that will create an image of your original figure and perform this
rotation on a NEW (3rd) graph.
▪ Use different colors to help viewers visualize the difference between the image and
original figure.
▪ You CANNOT pick a rotation of 0 or 360 degrees.
o State the transformation rule and the table using the same directions stated above (see
Graph # 1).
● Graph # 4: Dilation [**PAP - center cannot be origin**]
o Choose a single dilation (x1/2, x2 or x3) with a center of dilation at 0,0. Create a n image
of your original figure and perform this dilation on a NEW (4th) graph.
▪ Use different colors to help viewers visualize the difference between the image and
original figure.
o State the transformation rule and the table using the same directions stated above (see
Graph # 1).
Graph # 5: Composition
Choose and perform a composition from the list provided below:
1) Rotate 180° and then Reflect over the x – axis
2) T
ranslate to QII and then Reflex over y = x

3) Rotate 90° CW and Reflect
 over y - axis
Each stage of the sequence of transformations must be shown on the graph.
Use different colors to help viewers visualize the difference between the image and original
figure and each stage of the sequence.

Write the transformation under the graph and use prime and double prime.
In your table, have a column for the original coordinates, the coordinates after each sequence
of the transformations, as well as the final coordinates of the image.
Displaying your project:
● Your project needs to be neatly put together with each graph,
transformation rules, and table organized in such a way so that all
three things can been seen together (example: do not but the table on a different page
then the graph)
● Turn in your project by _______________________________________________
