How did the study of history begin, how it change and how will it continue to evolve ? and why does it
matter?
- Initially, history focused on recording God's actions and when major events like plagues
occurred, seen as evidence of God's work.
- Later began recording big events in a monarch's reign and royal genealogy. History was a
record of what monarchs caused to happen alongside God's actions.
- From the French Revolution, history claimed to be objective, based on government archives,
and a foundation for growing nation-states in the 19th century.
- Studying history (often national histories) became a way to define and unite peoples within
a nation. History gave factual authority to nation-states replacing absolute monarchies.
Revisionism
- History constantly revised (revisionism) as new facts come to light, biases acknowledged.
- Evidence, truthful inquiry remain goals for historians, though perfect objectivity
unachievable.
- How we understand the past shapes how we see present and future.

In the podcast, there are three reasons why we need to study history. First, because it is practical.
Second because it is important. Lastly, because it is necessary.
Studying history is not about memorizing details, dates and names. It's about stories. It's about
understanding what happened in our past and how it led to how we came to be.
According to Lee, one of the speakers in the podcast, we need to study history because it is
something practical that has value to our everyday life. He believes there are two essential practical
skills - practical reading and practical writing. He said these skills are more important than other skills
because they are transferrable to other fields. He also believes that history helps us develop reading
and writing skills that make us successful in our careers. He added that there are other skills we can also
develop when studying history:
1. Chronological thinking
– the core skill in how we reason in history. This allows us to understand how events
take place over time. We analyze and identify patterns, continuities and historical changes.
When we try to answer why events happen, we engage in chronological thinking, which is a vital
and relevant skill for any profession. This is a problem solving skill.
2. Comprehension
– when we study history, we creatively imagine the lives of people in the past, identify
their intentions and motivations, and sift through data presented to us in various forms like
graphs, maps, photographs and other materials.
“ Studying history develops many useful skills, but in the Philippines we are often taught history
simply as memorizing facts. We learn there is one right interpretation that comes from textbooks.
However, historians care more about the credibility of facts than the facts themselves. So studying
history teaches critical thinking , questioning norms, thinking creatively, and understanding that
interpretations evolve over time as perspectives change. Though many dismiss history as impractical,
the critical analysis skills it develops are extremely valuable. By teaching practical reasoning,
interpretation, and challenging assumptions, the study of history gives transferable skills that aid
complex decision-making. Lastly, history is relevant because it provides practical, analytical tools we use
in daily life.” Lee added.
According to Aaron one of the speakers in the podcast, studying history is important because it gives
us the sense of community identity because our past experiences shape our sense of identity. He also
believes that our history is like our memory. It plays a vital role in shaping our self-identity because it
helps us to remember our past experiences on who we are and where we came from. He also added
that history is like memory in our society and the whole humanity. He also believes that history provides
us the sense of justice if we seek truth, for example, because it reckons with the truth and sometimes it
is important because it leads us to justice.
According to Vec one of the speakers in the podcast, studying history is necessary. It helps us
achieve justice, responsibility and truth. By searching into the unfolding of events, throughout time we
gain an understanding of the causes behind the challenges we face today. Forgetting the past can lead
to unfairness. The spread of narratives. While history may uncover realities and complex issues that lack
solutions it equips us with valuable knowledge and critical thinking skills to engage in more constructive
discussions evaluate claims and intentions and drive genuine progress and transformation. A proper
understanding of the past empowers us with ammunition against deception and dangerous errors such
as excusing wrongdoings while wrongly claiming credit for achievements. In this era of information
abundance developing awareness, perspective and context brings us closer, to truth and justice across
all aspects of society.
